Sue Dwyer, second from left, poses with volunteers after receiving flowers at the Cayuga County Office Building in October 2019 as part of Petal It Forward, a national program through the Society of American Florists, where a person receives two bouquets, one for them to keep and one for them to pass on to another person. Cosentino's Florist provided 400 loose bouquets of flowers to be given away to random people on the street and in businesses in downtown Auburn.... https://cosentinoflorist.wordpress.com//is-the-retail-flo/

Think Quick! It is too late for online deliveries! Your favorite restaurant is booked, and so are the rest of them. The Best solution, even before considering the others, is Roses and a box of truffles from Cosentino's. Send Roses, truffles, and a teddy bear.

Flowers to Love: Alstrolomeria Just think, Alstrolomeria, a bland colored wildflower, a native of the Northern Andes Mountains, primarily Peru and Ecuador, was unknown to most florists in the 60's. But, as the need for more variety in the mix, scientists in the Netherlands began a breeding program that still goes on today. They began developing beautiful colors and a longer lasting flower. Today Alstrolomeria is our number 4 most popular flower, behind roses, mums, and carna...tions. We use a stem or two, sometimes more in each arrangement. The original names were Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas. Seems that we have gone back to its botanical name, Alstrolomeria, but a new name seems to be coming into general use: the Princess Lily. To make it last well in your vase, change the water every 4 or 5 days and be sure to use flower food.

I've had a very interesting weekend with culinary ginger, the type you bake with. But before going there, I need to talk about flowering ginger. These are very exotic-looking flowers that you find, from time to time, in flower shops. They are natives of the islands and lands around the South Pacific, with most that we see in our shops originating in Hawaii, though there is more and more production in Southern California. Who ever thinks of sending flowers to the "cleaning lady"? Think of what a few flowers from you will do to raise her spirits.

Time is running out! If you have not planted those Tulip bulbs yet, better hurry. You want them to get a few roots going before the ground freezes. Plant a few bulbs now and reap the rewards just as winter ends and you need a bright spot in the garden.

About Cosentino's: A History Lesson Although the Cosentino Family took over this property in 1933, excepting for about 12 years this has been a flower shop since 1895, a hundred and twenty five years ago. Mr. Dobbs opened the greenhouse operation at that time and thrived. Some ten or twelve years later he was joined in the business by his son for some years and then there was a falling out. Young Dobbs bought a parcel of land across the street and built a more modern, more ...efficient greenhouse operation, and in time they put each other out of business. Along came David M. Dunning, a prominent Auburnian. He purchased both properties and in the early 20's sold the new property to Mr. Winfield Boehler. He kept the told place running to produce flowers and grapes for his home table. That is, until November 1933, when he rented it to Carmine and Phyllis Cosentino and it became Cosentino's Florist.

Do you remember those beautiful small roses that we called sweetheart roses? Well, they’re gone. I am happy that growers decided that they were not as profitable as Spray roses. They are a great value and have 3 to 6 flowers on a stem. Very showy and very long lasting. Ask for them to be included when you next order.

Remember the Forget-Me-Not. This tiny, blue late spring and early summer flower is beautiful. Pick it, display it in a wine glass and enjoy the beauty. Legend has it that on a beautiful day, a couple was sitting by a river and she saw this beautiful flower half-way down the river. She admired it, and he offered to go down and pick some for her. With a bunch in hand, he fell into the river and as he floated away he held them high and shouted "forget me not!".

Why we love those carnations: To those folks who tell us not to use carnations in their arrangements: Have you seen the new varieties? They come in striking color and fascinating shapes and they last longer than most flowers. They are wonderful.

In these pandemic days, the loss of a loved one is truly tragic and lonely. We cannot sit with friends at a wake and chat about our loved ones. There are no hugs and kisses or the opportunity to hug and give condolences. Never will a hand full of flowers be more appreciated than in these dark days,
