Earlier I posted about language development being a house, with several foundational skills that are important for communication, with interaction and joint att...ention being key components! There are a ton of ways to do this- and I’m excited to team with @learnwithchatterboxes to bring you a week of activities and ways to work on this at home! Each day we will share how to use a variety of activities to work on these skills! And Caley will be in our stories to show you how to do it! Follow me on Instagram so you don’t miss it: Bit.ly/igMrsSpeechieP Tomorrow all we need is YOU & maybe a box Tuesday all you need is music or your voice! Wednesday we’re going to talk about cause and effect toys! (We said it! Close-ended toys aren’t terrible!) Thursday we’ll address how we work with motor driven kiddos & incorporate movement (our OT and PT friends will like this day!) Friday is all about imitation! Motor imitation games, sound imitation games .. so many fun imitation games. & Saturday is all about bubbles! Strategies & words to model, how to make them even more fun & more!

I teamed up with my friends at The Childhood Collective to bring you the differences in Autism and ADHD! They can be pretty difficult to tease apart because the...y have a lot of overlapping characteristics. Also, many individuals with an autism diagnosis struggle with inattention and impulsivity and/or also meet diagnostic criteria as having both autism and ADHD. This makes it tricky for an average person (and sometimes experienced professionals!) to differentiate the two, and exactly why a comprehensive and multidisciplinary evaluation can be most beneficial (and why I asked my friends to help out with this post!). Key differences: 1 Autistic individuals typically have differences and difficulties in understanding social rules/interactions, while those diagnosed with ADHD understand and know these rules, they just struggle attending and using them appropriately. 2 Language in autistic kids can often develop in an unusual manner resulting in atypical language (echolalia, scripting, jargon) or have splinter skills (strong labeling skills/vocabulary, difficulty with using language for a variety of purposes), while language in ADHD kids develops in a typical manner but often in a delayed timeline. This is where a quality speech/language evaluation comes in! 3 Autistic individuals may have special interests, preferred routines, body movements/stimming, and difficulty with the development of play- which children with ADHD do not typically present with. 4 While both may have difficulty distinguishing relevant and irrelevant information, autistic individuals often focus on details, while those with ADHD often miss the details.

Yesterday I talked about the average age and milestone for beginning to combine words- and today, what actually counts as two word combinations! The key is flexible use of words!
Two word combinations is a super important building block of language development- but one that can be easily overlooked by parents and pediatricians! If your c...hild is not combining words by 2 years of age, I would recommend a speech/language evaluation to determine if your child has a need for intervention. Stay tuned tomorrow when I will post what counts as a two word combination- and what doesn’t!
