Put the Oxygen Mask on Yourself First! You cannot give what you don't have and it is not selfish to help yourself first. This is a common belief that our society has, that you must give the shirt off your back to help others in need. That is very noble if you are not going to die frozen outside in a bad winter storm yourself, makes sense? Another saying we hear often is the saying on aircrafts: "In the event of an emergency, put your oxygen mask on first.". By helping others ...first, or ignoring the mask altogether, you will begin to lose your ability to rationalize and recognize faces and shapes, and eventually you will pass out. If you are a taker, be careful not to deplete the giver's in your life completely. If you are a giver, learn to accept and ask for help from others, so you can maximize your capacity to give. I am well trained, well versed, and have created a 'phoenix death and rebirth' learning life experience of my own, and I am just now getting to experience this learning to its core. It is NOT selfish to take care of yourself first, so you can take care of EVERYONE ELSE and be successful helping others. Be safe, be giving, and be receiving. Please consider this: Trying to fix people is extremely annoying. I learned from my coaching trainings and during my certifications that everyone is "NATURALLY CREATIVE, RESOURCEFUL AND WHOLE!" When someone comes to share something that is happening in their lives with you, pay attention, get out of your own head (your "what you would do's", your magical "advices", your self made "solutions"...) and listen!!! If someone asks you for a solution, help them find a solution ins...tead, utilizing their own inner resources, not yours. It is important to note that your self made solution may not be the best solution for that person in that specific moment! Believe me, they have their own answer within, and it is perfect. Asking permission to enter one's world is always necessary and noble, and dealing with a person as the big person they are, and not the fragile unable one you may be seeing, is truly appreciated as well. If you don't know how to do this, get help from a certified coach. We are trained to help you find your own ways and learn, so next time, you will be able to find your way, on your own!
