Columbia University Sketch Show 08.11.2020

As a predominantly white student group, Columbia University (Low Budget) Sketch Show would like to acknowledge our shortcomings, and pledge to do better with several action items in the next few months to combat anti-Blackness within ourselves and the wider Columbia performance community. The first of such action items will be to follow the lead of several other groups and open our wallets. For the next several days, CUSS will be matching all donations up to $400 towards org...anizations committed in the fight against anti-Blackness. Just send us a receipt to [email protected] or to one of our socials, and we’ll match your donation. ***Please choose from the four organizations listed below.*** In addition to this, CUSS will be having several upcoming conversations to discuss concrete ways in which we can become not only a more diverse but a more inclusive group. This past week has been a wake-up call that should have been unnecessary. We promise to do better in making the Columbia community laugh and feel seen and heard as we move forward, and we will let you know what this will look like once we have done our work and research. With Love and Solidarity, CUSS 1. Campaign Zero - an organization dedicated to ending police violence in America. (https://www.joincampaignzero.org/) 2. General Bail Fund - a bail fund that will split your donation between 70+ community bail funds, mutual aid funds, and racial justice organizers. (https://secure.actblue.com/donate/bail_funds_george_floyd) 3. The Marsha P. Johnson Institute - (From their mission statement) The Marsha P. Johnson Institute (MPJI) protects and defends the human rights of BLACK transgender people. We do this by organizing, advocating, creating an intentional community to heal, developing transformative leadership, and promoting our collective power. (https://marshap.org/donate/) 4. National Black Theatre - (From their mission statement) NBT's core mission remains the same today as it was at the time of its founding, to produce transformational theatrical experiences that enhance African American cultural identity by telling authentic stories of the Black experience. Dr. Teer envisioned NBT as a means to educate, enrich, entertain, empower and inform the national conscience around current social justice issues that impact our communities. We continue to provide a safe unhindered space for artist of color to articulate the complexity, and beauty of their experience through theater. (https://www.nationalblacktheatre.org/donate)

*EXTRA VIDEO* In a time of social distancing and self-quarantining, let's flashback to two weeks, to an entirely different time, where CUSS members could do what CUSS members do best: hang out, drink, make comedic content, and of course, try and fuck each other.

Dear all, We are wishing everyone in this community safe travels home, wherever that may be for you. This past week has been a whirlwind and we hope everyone has been taking care of themselves and their loved ones. We love this place and these people more than anything, and we are pained, like you all, to see it temporarily shutting down. We know CUSS might be the last thing on your mind right now, but feel it’s important to provide an update on our plan for the rest of the ...semester. After a lot of thought, we have come to the belief that in a time of global chaos and social isolation, it is more important than ever to continue our artistic, intellectual, and comedic pursuits. What’s more, CUSS’s role in the Columbia community has always been to provide comedic relief to on-campus stress and ridiculousness. This will not change. With that, we have made the decision to do our best to continue making content for the rest of the term. This content is going to potentially be very different from anything else we’ve made, so we ask for an open mind and some patience as we try and create something new, bizarre and (hopefully) humorous. CUSS forever and always, Malia and Patrick, CUSS Presidents
