The rain and snow-melt storm on Christmas day resulted in more than 63 billion gallons of water flowing into our reservoirs in the Catskills during a 48-hour pe...riod. That made it one of the largest runoff events in the history of our water supply. The photos below show the same stream in the Catskills one week before the storm, and the day after. The storm mobilized a lot of water and a lot of streamside sediment from the mountains. Our reservoirs caught much of this runoff, but the storm significantly increased their storage. Many reservoirs in the Catskills have a target for storage this time of year, which encourages DEP to keep some space in the reservoirs to catch additional runoff in the spring. For example, the current storage objective for Ashokan Reservoir is 90 percent. With storage currently at 89 percent and rising, DEP began to release additional water today from Ashokan Reservoir. The release was increased from 10 MGD to 100 MGD this morning. That quantity might increase in the coming days as we seek to control the storage at Ashokan. Similar increases were made at some of our Delaware System reservoirs. ***2 p.m. update - Ashokan release will go to 300 MGD. Out of the DEP Archives - 59 years ago today - Inside the West Delaware Tunnel, spiders were used to preserve the roundness of steel liners during their trans...portation, installation, and the placement of concrete in the gap between along the bedrock surface. At 44 miles long and more than 11 feet in diameter, this tunnel connects Cannonsville Reservoir to Rondout Reservoir, where water is then conveyed through the Delaware Aqueduct on its way to New York City. This photo was taken in December 1961. See more
