Adult Volunteer, Jessica shares her memories of her time as a Teen Helper at Dancing Dreams. "I volunteered with Dancing Dreams from 2014-15 while attending Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School as a Dance Major. I heard about DD from a friend who was also a volunteer. I was drawn to DD because I loved the notion set forth by the organization that dance could be accessible to anyone who wished to enjoy it and that I could use my passion to help other people. I served... as a Teen Helper to a 14-year-old girl with down syndrome. I had the privilege of not only helping her be able to dance, but I watched her overcome her disability in the process. Every week she would come to dance class ready to work. She never let her disability hold her back from doing what she loved. Her tenacious spirit and constant motivation never failed to inspire me. The growth I saw in her dance technique and social skills over the year was outstanding. I knew the real impact I had made in her life when she would run across the dance studio every week before class, shouting, "Where's Jessie?' When she found me, she would immediately give me a big hug, followed by an "I love you!!." There is truly nothing better in life than moments like this. My dancer changed my life in that she showed me what it truly means to be a leader. She taught me what it means to be kind and compassionate, but most importantly, no matter how hard something is, as long you believe in yourself, there are no limits to what you can achieve. Above all, my experience at DD ultimately inspired me to explore the field of education. I graduated in 2019 from SUNY Geneseo with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Childhood Education. I worked as a second-grade teacher in Virginia straight out of college. Since I have returned to New York, I knew if the opportunity presented itself, I would love to volunteer at Dancing Dreams again. Early this year, I reached out to the DD team, and I found out that they were looking for an Adult Volunteer, so I knew I needed to rejoin. Dancing Dreams has had a profound impact on my life. I have grown a lot as a person throughout my time spent at the studio. I feel blessed to give back to a place that has given so much to me." - Jessica Looks DancingDreams.org #DancingDreams #DreamsDoComeTrue #TeenHelpertoAdultVolunteer #ForeverDancingDreams
