Access to certain components on today's vehicles is sometimes difficult, due to the aerodynamic design of the vehicle's body. Here we have a 2005 Saturn Vue in need of a replacement radiator. The 3 images below are of a few of the components that need to be removed just to access the radiator.

A great example of corrosion damage from WNY salt! The top 2 photos are of the original front subframe, onto which attaches the front suspension, steering rack, and engine/transmission. It's pretty important! The bottom 2 photos are of the replacement subframe, a used part taken from a southern car.

Cold weather will reveal a weak battery like nothing else. As part of every winter weather vehicle check, we test your battery and charging system. Additionally, any battery 4 years of age or older should be regarded as "living on borrowed time".

2009 Chevrolet Express passenger van. Intermittent heater fan operation. Another shop had previously replaced both the heater fan and the heater fan resistor attempting to repair this problem. We discovered (first image) a burned fuse connection in the fuse panel located under the drivers seat. The second image is the replacement fuse panel. A careful troubleshooting process made this successful repair possible.

If you own a car produced after 1995, you may have heard the term "charcoal canister". Pictured below are two views of a typical charcoal canister (or vapor canister) from a Toyota. The canister is part of a vehicles evaporative emissions system; that is, the system that stores and manages the vapors that accumulate in the fuel tank. These vapors, if allowed to escape to the atmosphere, are a source of hydrocarbon pollution. The canister is a container filled with activa...ted charcoal. The charcoal has many rough edges, thus increasing it's surface area, allowing absorption of a large amount of vapor relative to its size. At the appropriate time, a valve attached to one end of the canister opens, allowing the vapors to be drawn in to the engine as fuel. Simultaneously, another valve on the canister opens, allowing in fresh air to replace the vapor. This process repeats itself, governed by the engine control computer. Many of the components in the evaporative emissions system are mounted outside the vehicle and are exposed to the elements. This causes heavy corrosion, contributing to early failure. In our experience, the most common failure is with the vent valve, followed by rust perforation of the filler pipe which goes in to the tank. See more

Top and bottom view of a severely corroded upper suspension control arm. This part was removed from a 2002 Honda Accord and clearly demonstrates the need for a proper annual safety inspection. This part was weakened by corrosion, and would have failed in the very near future, possibly with catastrophic results.

2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Check engine lamp illuminated, code P0440 stored. We used our smoke machine to try and locate the leak in the system. The leak was determined to be originating on top of the fuel tank. The fuel tank was removed and tested for leaks. The leak was found to be coming from a cracked fuel pump, due to excess pressure being exerted on it by the heavily corroded lock ring. Corrosion was removed, fuel pump replaced, and retested. The tank was reinstalled and the entire evaporative system tested for leaks. None were found, so the vehicle was returned to the customer. The accompanying image shows the cracked fuel pump housing.

This is a transmission mount removed from a Chrysler 300. The owner's concern was "an unusual vibration". The outer aluminum casting (with 4 holes) mounts to the vehicle's frame. The inner aluminum casting (with 2 holes) attaches to the transmission. Rubber separates and insulates the two castings (transmission and frame as well). The label points to corrosion that has formed between the two, effectively making them one solid casting. A replacement was not available that day, so the corrosion was removed, and the car put back in to service.

Image on the left is a fuel sample taken from a 2007 Silverado, which would not start and run. Fuel pressure was within specifications. The image on the right (lower) sample is the last bit of fuel/water mix drained from the tank. The upper sample is what fresh fuel looks like. It was later discovered that one of the vehicle owner's employees had added fuel to the tank from a contaminated gas can.

Many of today's vehicles are equipped with shielding under the engine compartment. These shields protect the engine area from road splash, and enhance aerodynamics. This shield, on a 2010 Hummer H3, is also a skid plate, offering protection from rocks, sticks, etc. This vehicle was brought in for a routine brake repair. We noticed that the front shield was not attached to the vehicle at its front mounting points. The owner had told us that he had just had the oil changed at an instant oil change shop. Changing the oil and filter on a modern vehicle often requires removing and properly reinstalling one or more of these shields. This particular oil change place neglected to reinstall the 2 front bolts on the skid plate. The second image is the skid plate after we properly secured it to the vehicle.

2008 Ford F150 pickup truck: airbag warning lamp on. Diagnostic trouble code stored for front impact sensor. First image is of the front impact sensor. Location: in front of radiator. Second image is of the sensor's electrical connector (disconnected for inspection ). The green powder is corrosion of the metal electrical terminal. This corrosion breaks the electrical path between the sensor and the vehicle's wiring. Located at the front of the vehicle, the sensor and it's wiring are subject to constant road spray. This moisture is able to penetrate the harness connector, causing corrosion of the sensor and wiring. Replacement of the sensor and connector is the appropriate repair.

This is what a typical cabin air filter looks like when we remove it for replacement. The cabin air filter, or particulate filter, filters the air flowing through the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Most newer vehicles are equipped with these filters, and they require replacement at an interval specified by the manufacturer of your vehicle.
