Do you have a favorite wild bird? Attract more of the types of birds you like by selecting the right seed mix. A quality seed mix that is the best for attracting the widest variety of birds will include: sunflower, safflower, nyjer, millet and cracked corn and peanuts. #wildbird #birdfeeding #deesnursery
Remember to keep your bird feeders clean throughout the winter months. Seed that sits too long in the bottom and corners of your feeders are fertile beds for disease and mold. Just clean out the seed that is left in the bottom of your feeders on a regular basis before refilling. This will prevent build-up of rancid, moldy seed which could make your backyard birds sick. #wildbird #birdfeeder #deesnursery
People need water in the winter and so do birds. Keep your birdbath filled this month and add a heater to prevent the water from freezing. #wildbirds #birdbaths #deesnursery
Continue to keep your feeders full. February can be a very cold and snowy month and our feathered friends are counting on you! We have a full supply of birdseed and feeders. #wildbirds #birdfeeder #birdseed #deesnursery
Replace your suet as soon as soon as you see it getting low. Suet is a quick source of heat and energy for wild birds and it will help them survive a cold and snowy February. #wildbird #birdfeeding #deesnursery
Heavy snow and ice can damage trees and shrubs. Gently brush snow off shrubs and prop up birch tree branches as necessary. Tie arborvitaes up with string or fishing line to prevent splitting. #deesnursery
With the shorter winter day, give your houseplants as much light as possible. Rotate your houseplants a half-turn every other week to help them grow evenly and not bend toward the light. You may want to consider a plant light. Stop in for suggestions. #houseplants #plantlights #deesnursery
Can't wait until spring? Add color to your home today with a selection from our greenhouse. We carry a wide variety of plants that are blooming now, like orchids, African violets and Kalanchoe, to keep you satisfied until warm weather arrives. #deesnursery
Keep an eye out for insect damage on your houseplants. Some pests are more prevalent in the winter months when the indoor air is dry. If spider mites or mealy bugs are present, spray plants with Houseplant Insecticidal Soap. We can identify problems via email. Send photos to [email protected]. #deesnursery
A live Christmas trees can be a memorable addition to your landscape. Make sure that you dig your planting hole before the ground freezes and amend it with Bumper Crop Organic Soil Amendment. Cover the soil mound with a layer of straw, topped with black plastic, to keep it from freezing. Plant your tree as soon as you are able after the holiday. #livechristmastree #christmastree #deesnursery
Seed starting will begin in earnest next month. In the mean time, take an inventory of your seed starting supplies to make sure that you have everything you need when ready to plant. This includes: heat mats, seed starting soil, market packs and pots, flats, plant labels, gro-light fixtures and bulbs. #deesnursery
Trees for Troops 2020 Version For the 17th year in a row Dees' joined forces with DHL, The Adelis Family and many many members of our community to send Christmas Trees to the US Military serving in the Middle East during Christmas. We could not do our traditional Sendoff like in years past due to the virus but that did not stop us. This year had even more meaning. We lost Jim Adelis, one of the founding members of Trees For Troops. Because of Jim and his tireless commitment to US Military causes as well as many local charities, we will continue this tradition in honor of him and his family. Our sincerest condolences to his wife Lucy and sons Jimmy and Tommy. Jim will be missed by many but never forgotten. Please check out some photos of this years event as well as some of the trees arriving in Afghanistan.
Make certain that you are stocked up on ice melt products, gloves, shovels and scrapers before the "big one" hits. We have everything you need to get your walkways, driveway and vehicle free from ice and snow. #deesnursery
As we close out the year, a stroll through a park or garden area is a great way to get outdoors and protect yourself from the winter blues, also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and to increase the serotonin levels responsible for keeping the brain balanced. Furthermore, gardening promotes peaceful rest, and a good night's sleep supports cognitive functions such as memory and concentration. Have a safe and healthy New Year from all of us at Dees’. #HappyNewYear #wintergardening #gardenforhealth #winter #gardening #deesnursery
Giving and receiving flowering plants at the holidays is a time-honored tradition. Cyclamen is a lovely little flowering plant that will bloom continuously for several months. #cyclamen #houseplants #deesnursery
Poinsettias last longer today than ever before since the introduction of new hybrid varieties. These newer varieties include not only the traditional red, but also white, pink and marbled colors. Plants that are properly cared for will give colorful displays lasting up to 6 to 8 weeks. #poinsettia #houseplants #deesnursery

Before decorating your planters with cut greens and berries for the holiday season, make sure that the soil is refreshed with Bumper Crop Organic Soil Amendment. This will lighten your gardening load in the spring when you simply pop-out the old (holiday decor) and pop-in the new (spring flowers). #holidayplanters #outdoordecor #deesnursery
Shred your raked leaves by running over them with your lawn mower. Add them to your compost pile, along with some compost bio-activator to speed up the decomposition process. #compost #leaves #deesnursery
It's fall and everything is pumpkin! The flesh and seed of pumpkins are excellent for eating. The benefits of this late season squash include eye health from vitamin A, improved immunity from vitamin C, youthful skin from beta-carotene, and the cancer fighting power of antioxidants! More pie, please! #pumpkins #fallpumpkins #deesnursery
When planting small bulbs such as snowdrops, squill, grape hyacinth, and crocus, it is best to plant them in large quantities and in drifts for a greater show of color. #grapehyacinth #minorbulbs #deesnursery
Wait until roses have dropped all their leaves before doing a thorough bed clean-up and laying down fresh mulch. This will help prevent disease problems next growing season. #rosecare #rosegardener #deesnursery
Today is National Pumpkin Day!
Suet is an important addition to your fall and winter wild bird feeding regimen. Made with rendered lard, suet cakes provide the fat required by birds to help them through the winter. Suet helps birds build up their own fat reserves to stay warm in cold temperatures. Pick up a case today so you don't run out. #suet #birdfeedingstation #deesnursery
Grass leaves grow much more slowly as the weather turns cooler, but the grass roots and rhizomes continue to grow quickly. A fall application of fertilizer delivers essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring. Apply Jonathan Green Winter Survival for superior results. #lawns #lawncare #lawncaretips #healthylawn #lawnmaintenance #lawngoals #deesnursery
Pumpkins and squash will take a frosting but not freezing temperatures. Cut them off the vine while temperature are still warm enough and store them in a cool, dry location to cook all winter long. #pumpkins #squash #deesnursery
Wait until mid-to-late fall to apply a dry lawn fertilizer to all grassy areas. You can use a crank-style broadcast spreader, but for optimum coverage, consider using a walk-behind drop spreader. It takes a little longer, especially on hilly yards, but a drop spreader provides the best way to apply an even, consistent layer of fertilizer. #lawns #lawncare #lawncaretips #healthylawn #lawnmaintenance #lawngoals #deesnursery
