Diamond Jubilee! 1945 - 2020 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Delaware County Historical Association. DCHA has been posting these entries from the 1945 diary of Katherine McIntosh. The diary excerpts are interspersed with stories from local newspapers. December 13... Packed Xmas stockings. From the Delaware Republican newspaper: December 13, 1945 A Progressive Dinner The members of the Dorcas Society of the Second Presbyterian Church enjoyed a progressive dinner followed by their annual Christmas party Monday night. The first course was served at the home of Miss Jeanette Foreman, who was assisted by Miss Alma Dreyfus. The group then progressed to the home of Mrs. Thomas J. Carlisle where the main course was served by Mrs. Carlisle and Mrs. Reginald Vosburgh. The dinner ended at the home of Mrs. Guy T. Parsons where the guests were served dessert. Misses Katherine McIntosh and Marion Leslie acted as assistant hostesses for the final course and at the Christmas party which followed. Christmas carols were sung and much amusement was afforded for all when each guest tried his art at fishing in a chimney for a wrapped gift. December 14 Cold day. House temp down to 62 degrees. 75 Days of DCHA 2020 marks the Delaware County Historical Association’s 75th Anniversary. We are counting down to the end of this year by highlighting some of the donations we have received in that time, listing objects, archives or buildings for each year DCHA has been in existence.... Today’s Highlighted Year: 2004 Quilts from the More Family, Roxbury Donated by Carol Lehman # 1 Everyday Quilt, ca. 1880 1910, pieced by Mary Clark Foote (see initials). This is a utilitarian pattern. # 2 Memory Quilt, 1890s, made by Nellie More Clark (1869 1934), quilted at farm before her marriage to Charles Patrick VanDyke, September 16, 1896. This type of quilt was made from different fabrics of clothing. Each would have a story or memory behind it. # 3 Signature or Friendship Quilt, 1890s, made by Nellie More Clark (1869 1934) just before she married. A quilt with this pattern would often have signatures in each square. This one, however, does not. # 4 Starburst pattern, ca. 1840 1860, made by Antoinette More.

Today's Anniversary: December 12, 1914 - From the Delaware Republican Newspaper: Advice to Girls... That's some dress you've got on, little girl. It sure is! That delicate, clinging, crinkly stuff is the prettiest cloth at the store counters; that silk Persian sash of many colors is so gracefully swathed about the center section of your anatomy it would knock the spots off Joseph's coat. You are corseted and tailored according to the most extreme models of the latest fashion books. But your neck is too low and your sleeves are too short, and your skirt is far away tighter than skirts were ever meant to be. And that graceful slit exposing your dainty left ankle shows a stocking above your pump that is almost transparent enough to read through. And you haven't any more petticoat than a rabbit - you know you haven't. Photo shows two local young women (unidentified) in 1917.
