Can I Recycle That?! Paperboard In Delaware County, paperboard is to be placed in the TRASH. It will then be composted. Cereal boxes, snack boxes, and most non-corrugated cardboard boxes are considered paperboard. (Corrugated cardboard and paper are highly recyclable and accepted in separate bins at the Solid Waste Management Center). ... Paperboard offers very little marketable value when sold on the recyclables market. This means that if we were to put efforts into separating, baling, and recycling the paperboard, it would cause a net loss in funds. Unfortunately, this is not a sustainable outlet for Delaware County paperboard. However, through composting the paperboard, we are adding value to an otherwise non-valuable material. It adds necessary carbon to the compost, with the final product being sold to local consumers, businesses, and municipalities. In this way, paperboard is not going to waste. As with a lot of packaging and materials, there are seemingly endless ways to reuse paperboard. Check out this link for some clever ideas: https://www.coupons.com/thegoodstuff/reuse-cardboard-boxes/ -- Have you ever had something you want to get rid of, but aren’t sure if it goes in the RECYCLING bin or the TRASH can? We can help! Tyson Robb, Delaware County DPW - Solid Waste Coordinator, will provide the answer! Message us or comment below with your question. In 2019, NYS passed the Food Donation and Food Scraps Recycling law. Effective January 1, 2022, businesses that generate an annual average of two tons of wasted food per week or more must: 1. donate excess edible food; and 2. recycle all remaining food scraps if they are within 25 miles of an organics recycler (composting facility, anaerobic digester, etc.). DEC is currently developing regulations for implementing the law. Once complete, draft regulations will be available fo...r public comment (anticipated spring/summer 2021). Information on grant funding for New York State businesses or not-for-profits that generate, haul, or recycle large amounts of wasted food and food scraps is linked on the DEC website. Rest assured that organics (such as food waste) that enter the Delaware County Solid Waste Management Center are already responsibly composted. However, if you are a large generator and are able, under this new legislation, to donate excess edible food, diversion from the SWMC just makes sense. #Infrastructure #DelCoNY #delcodpw #localgovernment #departmentofpublicworks #catskills #catskillmountains #greatwesterncatskills #newyorkstate #delawarecountyny #stayinformed #communityinfrastructure #reducereuserecycle #recycle #solidwaste For more information about this legislation and to sign up for updates, visit the NYS DEC website: https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/114499.html

Driving a plow is a demanding job. Our drivers are on constant lookout for personal property (such as mailboxes), other drivers, and road hazards. They put in long hours and then when they get home, they still have their own driveway to plow. Those roads that are the most heavily traveled are the most dangerous. Danger comes from vehicles and drivers. Aggressive and inattentive driving is unsafe, for the driver, passengers, other vehicles, and by-standers. We strongly encoura...ge drivers to moderate their travel speed in relation to road conditions as well as to what is going on around them as they are driving, which includes plows. Please slow down and give our plow drivers space. We appreciate the consideration of Delaware County residents and travelers in allowing us to get the job done. . . . #SnowPlow #DelCoNY #WinterDriving #delcodpw #localgovernment #infrastructure #departmentofpublicworks #catskills #catskillmountains #greatwesterncatskills #newyorkstate #delawarecountyny #safetyontheroad #stayinformed #communityinfrastructure

As COVID precautions remain in place and dining-in options are limited, reduce waste while supporting local restaurants by opting out of single-use cutlery and other single-use items such as condiment packets when placing your order. Disposable forks, knives and spoons are really not necessary if you are eating at home and are not recyclable in Delaware County. As more restaurants hear this request from customers, it will encourage them to adopt a by request only policy for... single-use items and can save businesses money and unnecessary waste in the process. To keep our crews and facilities running as efficiently and effectively as possible, we both stay up to date on the latest research in our field and participate in research studies. The Solid Waste Management Center (SWMC) has been an active research participant in several projects to further the overall solid waste management field, including the New York State Solid Waste Characterization Project. Led by Stony Brook University and sponsored by the NYS Department of Environm...ental Conservation, the goal of this research project is to explore how solid waste and recycling is currently transpiring in New York State and to develop recommendations for how it can be improved to achieve a more environmentally sustainable New York. For more about this ongoing study, check out this recap of 2019-2020 and see if you can spot Delaware County in the mix. With the diligence of our patrons (you!) in properly recycling and disposing of your waste, we can provide a cleaner end product that contributes to more sustainable systems.
