Botswana is currently the world's second largest diamond producer. The story of its diamond find is a serendipitous one. Ruled by the British Empire for over 80... years, Botswana was thought to be a backwater with no natural resources and was largely ignored. At the time of its independence from the British Empire in 1966, it was one of the poorest countries in the world. A mere year later, however, an enormous diamond kimberlite pipe was discovered in Orapa, a remote region roughly 250 miles from the capital of Gaborone. This kimberlite pipe became the world’s second largest diamond-producing kimberlite pipe and the world’s largest diamond mine by area. The timing of this discovery meant that this new resource could be used for the people of Botswana. With the help of income from diamonds, Botswana quickly rose to become a middle-income country, with funds from diamonds being used to build schools, roads, hospitals and to fight AIDS.
