"Lovejoy, who has been an ortho scrub tech for five years, is especially appreciative of the slanted shelves and the wide, flat work surface. 'I can see everything and not have to dig around looking for something,' she said. 'I can lay everything out and have it ready.'" U.S. Army

RN // "There is something very comforting to me, just being my patient’s advocate. It’s huge. You’re taking these patients who have never had surgery before, and the fear that they have and just being able to go in and comfort them, it is amazing, I think it’s a talent, to be able to calm them to the point where they’re trusting me with everything they have, everything they know, since they are completely unaware of everything that’s going on. And to create a bond so quickly..., where they trust you with their life, it’s amazing. It’s just that feeling, all the time, that’s amazing. Starting out as a surgical tech was huge. I recommend it, if everyone has the opportunity to learn how to scrub, because it gives you a whole new perspective. You can anticipate what your scrub will need before they ask for it. If someone says ‘hey, this clamp isn’t clamping right’ - if you have no idea what it’s supposed to do, then you can’t get what they need. I think it’s a huge benefit to have circulators who know how to scrub. It adds that much more value to you."

RN // I always loved the OR. On my rotations I always knew I wanted to be in the OR. I think it is interesting, it is a different type of nursing. You’re looking at a vulnerable patient, they’re asleep, and you have a lot of responsibility, and it’s a different type of responsibility. The circulating nurse is looking at the bigger picture. The positioning, and making sure that no one is contaminating anything, and so while the patient is under the nurse is looking out for th...eir best interests, as their advocate. Sometimes when you haven’t done a procedure, even if you’ve done something similar, there’s still anxiety of not knowing what to anticipate, or that you’re going to do something wrong. And I think the big thing isn’t getting yelled at - the surgeon’s just doing a good job - you want to do a good job, you don’t want to look stupid. You want to look like you know what you’re doing. One of the nurses here taught me everything I know. She’s amazing.
