Us theatre folk rehearse. Tons. That’s what we do. We practice and practice until we get it right or at least find out something is totally wrong and then we try to fix it. In rehearsal. Rehearsal is where the magic of theatre flourishes and discoveries are made. Studios like Shetler, Ripley Grier, and Pearl are where everyone in the industry have rehearsed. These rehearsal halls are where we’ve created, performed, read, played, laughed, cried, auditioned, wrote, or just sat... to rest, to stop and assess. Rehearsal is the one place where we felt safesafe enough to dream, safe enough to just breathe. Two days ago news came out about the closing of Shetler Studios and a picture of ‘Disenchanted!’s official Off-Broadway press event was posted with the story on Broadway News. All the memories of the show’s time in NYC came rushing back: Michelle Knight’s Snow White photo was displayed (3 stories tall) high above Times Square on one of those flashy electronic billboards, show posters could be found throughout the city on phone booths, subway platforms, and parking lot signboards - it was a magical time for the ‘DIS!’ gang. Michelle sang that first note and cameras clicked, buzz began, and we were off to the races. Before we knew it, ‘DIS!’ was in all the papers, on TV, splashed all over the internet, and featured on numerous radio shows - because of that day at Shetler Studios - the space that gave us the literal room to grow, to fly. We are forever grateful to #ShetlerStudios for it’s commitment to the arts and providing a safe home to theatre artists over the past 30 years. We will always remember that special day.
