DORSKY FRESH METALS . Gender and Domestic Space . The elaborate and powerful piece in this first image is by New Paltz graduate Lola Brooks. It resembles an historical form of adornment called a Chatelaine. Originally a kind of keychain for the lady of the castle, These decorative belt hooks were worn at the waist and featured a series of suspended chains mounted with useful household appendages such as sewing or kitchen tools, watches, house seals, and, of course, keys. Wo...rn only by women, a Chatelaine was often a status symbol because it signified that the wearer was the head of the household. . The implements suspended from this contemporary version recall basic sewing tools: an encased thimble, pincushion, and tape measure. However, these items have an armored quality that brings to my mind weapons and shields. The pincushion in the center, studded with points-out pins reminds me of a mace, and the tape measure is serrated metal, like a saw blade. Brooks may be suggesting that in this world where violence against women is all too common, a woman might find it particularly useful to have a weapon on hand, like the cat ear self defense weapons that are a common addition to many contemporary women’s keychains. . Brooks’s piece enriches the conversation between works in this grouping which acknowledge how the history of jewelry is saturated with gendered associations. In America, just like cooking, needlework, housekeeping, and child-rearing, jewelry has commonly been associated with the feminine. This collection of jewelry and objects contains playful, sentimental, and satirical references to gender and domestic space. In spring 2022, "Ben Wigfall & Communications Village" will examine the evolution of printmaker Benjamin Wigfall as an artist while also exploring printmaking as a form of art production and community engagement for 20th-c. Black American painters and sculptors and their communities. . Wigfall’s artistic education began as a result of an after-school arts program at his public high school in Richmond, VA. He increasingly embraced the medium of printmaking, first to studing wi...th famed Argentinian intaglio printer Mauricio Lasansky then to Yale’s School of Design, where he was one of the first Black students. Like many of his Black contemporaries, he pursued a career as a U. art professor, first at Hampton Institute and then SUNY New Paltz. . Deeply marked by his experience growing up in a segregated South and all too aware of the challenges of being a Black manlet alone a Black artist, he rejected literal artistic representations of his life experience. For Wigfall, [there was] nobility in something very common like the smokestacks that lined Richmond’s skyline and reflected his own complicated movements through the segregated city. . After moving to NY, in 1973 Wigfall bought and renovated an old livery stable in a working-class Black neighborhood. Originally, he intended it to be his private studio. Instead, Wigfall opened his doors to curious local teenagers and for the next ten years dedicated the building to the community’s youthCommunications Village. . FRIDAY FINDS . British-born American artist Mary Frank (b. 1933) is best known for her abstract paintings and sculptures, and she is recognized for her dramatic and expressive subjects. Her artistic career spanned nearly five decades, and she earned numerous art commissions. Frank trained as a dancer and studied with Martha Graham from 1945 to 1950. Familiar with how the body moves, she created figurative sculptures, paintings, and works on paper that often emphasize movemen...t and reflect her sharp awareness of the relationship between the body and the surrounding world. . During the early 1950s, Frank began creating wooden sculptures, and she briefly studied with Hans Hofmann and Max Beckmann. She also worked in painting, printmaking, and drawing, creating portraits, landscapes, and narrative scenes that often merge myth and memories and sometimes focus on personal loss. In 1969, Frank started working on large, multipart gurative clay sculptures, and during the early 1980s she began to turn toward painting. . Frank approaches color and form in a distinctive manner. In her monoprints, she uses transparent layers that create depth and movement. For example, her monoprint Poppies (ca. 1980), from the Dorsky collection, illustrates her interest in movement and the natural world. Set against a pale blue sky, the poppies’ wispy stems twist as if seeking sunlight. The layers add dimension and movement to her work. . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #npsocial #poppies #flowers #contemporaryart #maryfrank #hudsonvalleyartists See more

DORSKY FRESH METALS . The Primordial Imagination . These three pieces by Sayumi Yokouchi, Jamie Bennett, and Michael Owen O'Neill are some of my favorites in the exhibition. Their abstract, playful, and energetic shapes, lines, and colors remind me of the earnestly sincere imagination of childhood. They put me in touch with the kind of optimism, much needed in these times, that I suspect comes from a deep, primordial place in all of us. ... . Japanese artist and educator Sayumi Yokouchi, who graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1999, explores daily experiences and imaginations as a maker. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the US, Asia and Europe, and her unique interdisciplinary workshops offer both technical and conceptual approaches in the field of art, design and contemporary jewelry to engage individual voices and the meaning of handmade. . Jamie Bennett is Professor Emeritus of the SUNY New Paltz Metal Program, which he directed from 1986 to 2014. One of the pre-eminent enamellists in the world, Bennett’s work is known for its innovative use of color, matte surfaces, and deep engagement of material and process. His participation in many pioneering exhibitions such as American Masters at the Victoria and Albert Museum; Jewellery Moves at the National Museum of Scotland; New Times, New Thinking Jewellery in Europe and America at the National Museum of Wales underscore his influence and impact in contemporary jewelry. DORSKY FRESH METALS . The Primordial Imagination . The works in this grouping share an aesthetic that feels cosmically elemental. They remind us of early forms of life or the building blocks of imagination. Organic shapes, basic geometry, and ambiguous identities invite us to contemplate the origins of the world around us.... . Five brooches by David Urso, who graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1980, are the unifying force in the The Primordial Imagination. Each of these gestural, irregularly shaped pins was created by embedding herbs, spices, and other foodstuffs like cornmeal into hand-tinted resin on a base of metal. Urso's highly sophisticated handcrafted jewelry is a visual feast of color, form and surface characterized by sensual organic shapes and a painterly use of materials. The resulting works are vibrant, earthy, and beautifully textured. LEWIS HINE, CHILD LABOR INVESTIGATOR . On April 14, 1912, Lewis Hine interviewed newsie Israel April who stated "I serves the President." Hine noted that April had been selling paper for several years, and Hine found him selling after midnight on April 17th and 18th. Hine noted that he was "quite a pugnacious little chap. He and his brother are said to have a large clientele among ambassadors and senators." . April was one of many children working on the streets, yet the abu...se and adversity they endured attracted little attention. Some were homeless and paid for room and board with their newspaper earnings, and others worked to help support their families. . #LewisHine #NCLC #photography #newsies #childlaborers #dorskymuseum #20centuryphotography #WashingtonDC #streetsellers #npsocial See more

A close-up of Marco Maggi’s style of cutting, similar to the cuts on each one of the reams of paper of Hotbed Line. Plus, some good text from @marcomaggipress . FRIDAY FINDS . Provocatively titled Hotbed Line, this full-room installation piece consists of 76 reams of white copy paper, extending in a line along the length of the gallery floor. Using an X-acto knife, the artist has cut a shape in the top sheet of each ream. The cuts are sometimes flat, sometimes folded up to protrude from the surface of the paper, sometimes mere slits, and sometimes openings of varying widths. . Marco equates his work to written language. Here, e...ach sheet of paper is inscribed, through cutting and folding, with hieroglyphic shapes which the viewer reads as they proceed along the row of reams. Each ream is a self-contained sculpture, as well as an integral part of the entire assemblage. It is left to the viewer to tease out the obscure verbal/visual message of this large and simultaneously small sculpture, cunningly crafted and conceptually complex. . The assemblage is part of the sculpture collection and was exhibited in the Dorsky Museum exhibition, From Huguenot to Microwave: New and Recent Works by Marco Maggi, in 2011. . Maggi divides his time between Montevideo, Uruguay, where he was born, and New Paltz, NY. He represented the U.S. in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. He received his MFA at SUNY New Paltz. . . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #npsocial #marcomaggi #copypaper See more

FRIDAY FINDS . American artist James Rosenquist (1933-2017) became a key figure of the Pop Art movement during the mid-twentieth century. . Rosenquist lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota for the early portion of his career, where he studied at the Minneapolis School of Art and Design, and the University of Minnesota. Subsequently, he moved to New York, where he joined the Art Students League. ... . Rosenquist’s style was influenced by his work in sign painting, where he became fixated on consumerist culture in American society. However, unlike other members of the Pop Art movement, Rosenquist’s works were also inspired by Surrealism. In this collage print from the Dorsky’s collection, entitled A Free For All, Rosenquist’s unique approach to Pop Art is highlighted, with the juxtaposition of discernible symbols, like the American Flag, in contrast with the abstraction of the other surroundings. . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #npsocial #popart #twentiethcenturyart #surrealism #artstudentsleague #JamesRosenquist #jamesrosenquistart See more

FRIDAY FINDS . French artist and Cubism cofounder George Braque (18821963) influenced the history of art through his support of Fauvism and, later, through his role in the evolution of Cubism alongside his friend Pablo Picasso. Braque worked across various mediums, including printmaking. . From the Dorsky collection, "The Bird" is an example of a motif that the artist turned to frequently during the 1950s. He produced countless variations, illustrating the bird on its own, a...s part of a flock, or in flight. . In the Dorsky example, Braque contrasted a flattened, abstract white bird, fish, and a star against a clear night sky. He employed vibrant lapis lazuli blue highlighted by white and yellow accents, typical of his style. This lithograph’s abstract details are reminiscent of the works of Matisse and Picasso, who, like Braque, also illustrated animals, birds, and plants with minimal lines. . @tate @phillipscollection @braques . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #slowart #npsocial #braque #cubism #fauvism #printmaking #lithography #frenchart #picasso #artbirds #fish #stars See more

FRIDAY FINDS . Jervis McEntee (18281891) was a key figure of the Hudson River School painting movement which flourished during the mid-19th century. . McEntee was born in the town of Rondout, New York, where he taught himself how to paint. In 1850, he became the apprentice of Frederic Church, who was considered one of the most influential American painters for his work in the Hudson River School style, and, with his help, McEntee also gained prominence within the movement. ... . McEntee’s Hudson Valley scenes encompass many of his most notable works. However, in 1869, the artist was able to travel to Europe where he captured a multitude of landscapes, including this painting from the Dorsky collection entitled Italian Scene. Although this may seem like an outlier in McEntee’s portfolio, the expansive, glowing sky is reminiscent of his Hudson Valley depictions. . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #dorskyfromhome #npsocial #italy #italianscene #hudsonriverschool #ninteenthcenturypainting #oilpainting See more

FRIDAY FINDS . Painter Ivar Elis Evers (18661955) was born in Sweden. He received his architecture training in Stockholm and his artistic foundation at the Art Students League of New York, where he studied with the renowned American impressionist J.H. Twachtman. . Both a watercolorist and an architect, Evers was an active member of the Woodstock Artists Association, and he is best remembered for his watercolors, depicting domestic spaces, gardens, and house interiors.... . "Apple Orchards, New Paltz," ca. 19301950, from the Dorsky collection, shows Evers's interest in the interplay between light and shadow, which is evidenced in the afternoon sunlight cast upon the bright green hillside, dark green pine trees, pale blue sky, and apple trees. His watercolors evoke the feeling of visiting an orchard on a crisp afternoon. . Through watercolor, Evers depicts the Hudson Valley's natural beauty, which drew the artist to New Paltz from New York City in 1914. Interested in the history of the region, he purchased and restored a historic home on Huguenot Street in 1918. Evers remained in New Paltz until he died in 1955. . #fridayfinds #inourcollection #dorskycollects #dorskycollection #dorskyanywhere #museumfromhome #hudsonvalley #slowart #npsocial #newpaltz #appleorchards #IvarElisEvers #watercolors #ivarevers #hudsonvalleyartists #huguenotstreet #huguenot #Twachtman #artstudentsleague @waam @jamescoxgallery @aslnyc @americanart See more
