Draves Arboretum

On a cool wet dreary day, this glimpse in time, carotenoids and flavonoids portray their splendor. With vibrant reds of Quercus coccinea, mellow oranges from Quercus montana, the beginning display of yellow to orange then red of Acer maximowiczianum, yellows which adorn Acer platanoides, fully complimented with the white bark on our native Betula papyrifera. Where else can one explore so much diversity?

We honor and appreciate what Military Veterans have given in service to our great nation. Veterans are invited to visit the Arboretum free of charge on Veterans Day, November 11th, between 10am and 3pm. Civilians are welcome to visit as well, admission is $12.00. Members may use their free passes.

Sassafras spectacle! Scroll through the pictures to see the many delights Sassafras albidum brightens in its little corner of the Pinetum, not so hidden now in all its fall splendor! Can you spot all the different leaf shapes? Which one is your favorite? This native plant starts with a shrubby form, but matures into a dense, pyramidal tree. Sassafras is dioecious, so you will need to plant both male and female if you are looking for flower and fruit production. Widely used b...y Native Americans for medicinal and culinary purposes. Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Annual Membership Meeting! It was a beautiful day to walk among the trees and we are truly grateful to our membership for their continued support. This Saturday is our Annual Membership meeting: members are invited to the Arboretum for the afternoon- for free!
