Phone Scam Alert! Note: Originally posted in 2013 I am reposting this because this Scam has accelerated to epidemic proportions so please be aware that Microsoft or HP or ANY computer industry Giant NEVER would call to warn you of a virus on your computer. There have been a lot of reports from my clients about a phone scam that goes like this, "This is Windows Security, we have been monitoring your system and there are security issues on your computer." The heavily accented ...voice goes on to lure the subject to connect their machine to a website where the voice takes control of the computer, and "shows" them how terribly infected their machine is, all in an attempt to sell a "fix" which is actually designed to get their credit card info and steal their identity. Some people, smelling a rat, disconnect the voice from their machine, only to find that their computer's password has been changed and they are no longer able to log onto their machines! Unfortunately the phone numbers these calls come from are patched in from overseas so even if you have caller ID, reporting the event to the BBB (or other agency) is an effort in futility. Just so you know, Microsoft NEVER contacts their customers in this manner. If you receive such a call, HANG UP IMMEDIATELY! (Added 4/16/2017) If they call back and are insistent that they must "help" you, tell them to call me (as your friend) and I'll mess with their minds! LOL
