It is so important to understand how behaviors that may be deemed "inappropriate" are ways to adapt to circumstances. I often explain to parents and professionals how such behaviors are coping skills. Thanks, Dr. Delahooke! https://monadelahooke.com/why-we-misunderstand-behaviors-i/
I was so glad to be invited by B'ZT Smart Clothing to participate in a panel discussion which highlighted the safety concerns for young children and individuals with special needs. My experience working with individuals with autism and their parents, including in schools for children with special needs as well as in preschool settings shed light unto the numerous safety concerns that exist and the benefits of safety technology. #autism #safety #wandering https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t4O-9AslNE&feature=youtu.be
Like many other people, I was happy to move past 2020 and welcome in a new year. My new calendar arrived with this bold quote (above; photo credit) for the month of January. It certainly reframes how we might think about winter. As a figure skating coach whose family comes from Norway, I’d like to be able to summon my inner Elsa and say that the cold never bothered me anyway. But for those of us without Disney magic, cold weather is often unpleasant, to say the least.... http://drtobingpuente.com//outdoor-therapy-another-novel-/
Unfortunately, this is not at all surprising. It is critical that families advocate for their children and EI (as well as CPSE and CSE) provide additional support to make up for those lost months with inadequate services. https://www.nydailynews.com//ny-early-intervention-pandemi

We are excited to announce the start of a new virtual ongoing class for older teens and young adults! Dr. Lauren and Josh Noble, LCSW will be running this weekly group to teach individuals coping skills and ways of processing their COVID-19 experiences.
As discussed in the previous blog the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families and our practice in many ways. I described the (many unexpected) positive of our use of telehealth in the previous blog, while here I delve into the challenges we have encountered and how we have addressed them. Cons/Challenges of Conducting Remote Psychotherapy Sessions and How We Have Addressed Them:... http://drtobingpuente.com//adapting-to-the-use-of-telethe/
I am so proud to know several autistic young adults who voted for the first time in the presidential election. A prime example of advocating for oneself and asserting one's ideas. #disabilityrights #autism #vote2020

Welcome back! As the pandemic continues, we are continuing with our Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes blog series. This blog highlights the positive impact that we have found of COVID-19 related restrictions and changes on our intervention with our clients. The next blog will detail the challenges we have encountered and how we have addressed them. To briefly reflect, we as a society have now been dealing with the impact of the pandemic for more than 7 months. [ 604 more words ] http://drtobingpuente.com//adapting-to-the-use-of-telethe/
As many of you have children at home delving into full days of remote learning, read tips from my colleague and esteemed OT, Lindsay Biel (Raising a Sensory Smart Child) , featured in NYT. And remember, these can work for adults too! #remotelearning #sensorysmart https://www.nytimes.com///family/remote-learning-tips.html
This is a very big concern for both remote and in-person learning. #specialneeds #IEP https://ny.chalkbeat.org//ict-students-special-education-n
How many of us remember the time before the A.D.A.? While we have come far, there is much more to be done. (Great to see Ari Ne'eman and ASAN cited here). https://www.nytimes.com//americans-with-disabilities-act.h
Check out this fantastic NYT series on the importance of play in child development and social-emotional well-being. A wonderful collection of articles for all parents to read. https://www.nytimes.com//21/parent/the-state-of-play.html
Dr. Delahooke wisely explains the importance of recognizing implicit racism and how race and bias impact children's perception of safety in their environments. It is crucial that we see color and look deeper into how race and bias may underlie behaviors and the responses to them. https://monadelahooke.com/addressing-implicit-bias-in-our-/
Some very good points here. It is critical that everyone consider children's social-emotional functioning and the impact of peer interactions, especially the absence of unstructured live, in-person daily interactions. https://www.wsj.com//the-toll-that-isolation-takes-on-kids

Taking a moment today to honor and reflect on the life of psychologist, Dr. Olivia J. Hooker, the last survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. She went on to become the first African-American woman in the Coast Guard, and then received her PhD in clinical psychology. She was a professor at Fordham University, my alma mater, and worked with my mentor and former professors. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivia_Hooker
In Part 3 of the Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes blog series, I will focus on our adaptation to the concept of Social Distancing. This term, which many of us never heard before March 2020, is so prevalent within our vocabulary, the media, and our mindset in recent months. This term may have brought about many emotions in us: fear (What if I can’t buy my necessities if shopping in stores is not safe?), sadness (I miss giving people hugs), or frustration (What will I do if I can’t see my friends, family, or coworkers?).
