Brrrrr! It's getting a little chilly out there. You may know already, but the Farmhouse was kept warm in the winter using the fireplace in the kitchen downstairs. Did you know a big part of the retained heat is because of the bedrock it sits upon? Some rock retains heat better than others, it all depends on the stone's specific heat capacity and density. Stone can also transfer heat, a process called thermal conductivity. According to the American Museum of Natural History, the island of #Manhattan is built on three layers of rock known as Manhattan Schist, Inwood Marble and Fordham Gneiss. One of the best natural stones with high energy density and excellent thermal conductivity is marble. Talk about hitting you with rock-hard facts! #ScienceIntersectionSunday CGP Science Museum Studies

Who else loves the colors of autumn? Do you know why the leaves change? As you may know, leaves have a chemical called chlorophyll which helps make photosynthesis happen - which makes them food. Chlorophyll creates that beautiful green color we see in the warmer months. However, when the days get shorter and cooler, the leaves no longer produce enough food to maintain the green. This allows the other colors in the leaves to show through. These "fall colors" come from a pigment called anthocyanins, which acts like a sunblock to protect the leaf tissue. TLDR; leaves pretty, science cool. Share your fall color pictures with us! Photo courtesy of Dr. Erik Stengler at CGP Science Museum Studies! #ScienceIntersectionSunday

Check out another great Thursdays with NooMAA! . . . Reposted from @nomaanyc... TONIGHT Oct 22, 7:30pm Join us for Thursdays with NoMAA live on Zoom or watch on Facebook Live link at nomaanyc.org Elizabeth Starevi I weave large scale wall hangings. My work has been inspired by: travel, works of art, my desire for peace in the world in a time of war: family and friends, as well as the many beautiful colors and textiles that surround me like the magnificent work with metal done by the African artist El Anatsui. Darwin’s Gardin came from a trip to a Charles Darwin Exhibit at the Bronx Botanic Gardens. I have woven all my work on a standing loom in Bellas Artes, The Fine Arts School in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. I have been weaving in Mexico for over twenty-five years and have had solo shows and participated in group shows in Mexico, New York City and Canada. My work is on permanent display at the City College, City University of New York and at York College (CUNY). It is on long term loan at the NYC Career Center in Washington Heights and at the New York Public Library. A grant from the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance helped me buy a loom and to start weaving in New York City. I look forward to reaching a wide audience by exhibiting my work in many different venues.
