Sometimes when things are a little bleak, with drills cancelled and celebrations too, a little historical gem comes our way to brighten the season at the EAFD. A work by famous late local artist Rixford U. Jennings, who painted many great watercolor works of EAFD trucks, engines, and select scenes from our history. This was donated by the Chudy family, who, once they were informed of the historical relevance of the artwork, were thrilled to give it such a fitting home as the East Aurora Fire Department, subject of the painting.

The past month EAFD and AMR responded to several incidents of people falling off of roofs, ladders, and scaffolding. This time of the year many of us are putting up holiday decorations, checking chimneys, or doing emergency home repairs in less than ideal conditions. Please be careful when working on elevated surfaces or ladders. We have been told that falling off of a roof really stinks!

This past Thursday was a bittersweet day for the EAFD. It was 10 years ago when Firefighter Randy Ess, a 40 year veteran of EAFD, EAPD Officer Joe Ferarra, and Coach Chris Koselny rescued a 10 year old who had suffered from a cardiac incident in the pool at the East Aurora Middle School. These three men have impacted the lives of just about every East Aurora resident in some way over the past few decades. Firefighter Ess, Officer Ferarra, and Coach Koselny, great work and thank you for being the role models that you are.

Earlier today a few of us took a trip down to the new Town of Aurora/ Village of East Aurora offices. It was an amazing experience seeing in person what became of our old station. There is so much East Aurora history within those walls and it is only fitting that the Town and Village offices are now based out of that building. Who remembers what year that building became the East Aurora Fire Hall?

Last night at approximately 2100 hrs EAFD was alerted to a one car motor vehicle accident on mill road in the area of the waste water treatment plant. When East Aurora 9 arrived on scene he found a vehicle on its side pinned between a tree and a hill. The jaws of life and several other rescue tools were used to free the sole occupant from the vehicle. Once extricated the occupant was transported by Mercy Flight to ECMC. A big thank you to AMR Western New York as well as the Jamison Road Vol. Fire Co. who assisted us securing the landing zone for Mercy Flight.

Here is our virtual Fire Prevention presentation, traditionally done at Parkdale Elementary School for the Kindergarten through 3rd grade students. They watched this in class recently in lieu of our usual visit. We also sent home fire prevention packets, which included fire safety lessons and puzzles, crayons, and some other fire safety goodies!

As is tradition during Fire Prevention month, the East Aurora Fire Department visits a number of preschools in the area, as well as Parkdale elementary school. Some of this was virtual, such as the video we made for Parkdale, and some were socially distant, largely outdoors weather permitting. The outpouring of gratitude from area preschools, EA Community Nursery, Duck Duck Goose, Baker Memorial Preschool, and Sprouts to name a few, was just tremendous! Pictured below is a small selection of the fabulous art they gave as parting gifts following our presentations, and we are so grateful. Our prevention season is by no means over, but wanted to reach out to the community and share the positive experiences we have had with our modified and socially distant fire prevention outreach thus far.

Happy Fall from the EAFD! It is National Fire Awareness month! Every year we look forward to putting on our annual Open House, and making stops at as many East Aurora schools, Preschools, and Day Cares as possible to raise awareness about fire prevention, fire safety, and what the East Aurora Fire Department does. Unfortunately due to the coronavirus we cannot continue all our usual October traditions this year, but we are going to do our absolute best to reach out... to you, our community, in a safe way. We are primarily doing this by utilizing our Facebook and Instagram pages, where we are working on posting content that both promotes fire safety and shows you what we do not only during the month of October but year round! We are also starting something new this year, something BIG, that we are going to announce on the evening of November 1st as a way to wrap up this years Fire Awareness month so stay tuned! As always we are looking for new members so if you are interested in joining, or if you just have a question about EAFD; reach out! See more
