Fun things happen during our sessions at the Bill Canfield Fly Fishing Camp,

East Branch Outfitters 22.10.2020

Special COVID-19 Statement May 2, 2020 June Session Cancellation The rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation is disconcerting to many of us...especially with the magnitude of current unknowns, and the breadth of their impacts on our lives. The team at the Bill Canfield Fly Fishing Camp for Kids has been working diligently to monitor and adjust as necessary, out of obvious concern for the health and safety of our campers and staff. Additionally, we are proceeding with extreme sensitivity to the limited resources of the rural communities upon whom we depend to make the camp happen, and the serious impacts an influx of tourists could bring to them. Camp is an important part of every child’s summer, and we have been working hard to deliver the best Canfield Fly Fishing Camp for everyone despite the present challenges. We have been communicating with the leadership at French Woods, local officials, and our partners to discuss recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as guidelines from our state and local authorities in New York and Pennsylvania. We have also been tracking the travel policy restrictions and airline shutdowns that might affect our campers, as well as the many ways our planned programs for the week might be impacted by new safety requirements. Sadly, it has become clear that for reasons of both camper safety and general practicality, it will not be possible to conduct the June session of the Canfield Fly Fishing Camp. The health, safety and well-being of our campers, staff and partners is of paramount importance, and there is simply too much uncertainty in the short-term to ensure we can respond effectively. Given the latest information available, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 JUNE session of the Canfield Fly Fishing Camp. As the situation and response guidelines are changing daily, we know that many things will look different between now and summer. As such, we intend to continue registration for the AUGUST 2020 session through July 1. We will continue to closely monitor the coronavirus situation and if it is unsafe to run the August camp, we will not run the camp. If it is not evident on July 1 that things will be better in August, we'll cancel the August session at that time. Additional details and regular updates will be posted on this page going forward. We have some new and exciting ideas to keep kids interested in fly fishing during this difficult time. Be sure to check this page often, and if you would like our future newsletter and other important information by email; please email Peter, his information is below, and he will add you to our list. While saddened at the cancellation of our June camp, we are looking forward to moving forward. Please enjoy a safe summer. East Branch Outfitters 29.09.2020

We hope everyone is safe and healthy during these trying times. We will NOT be open for lodging or guided trips until, at the earliest, June 1. Our position is based on many factors during this crisis but ultimately boils down to one single overriding factor. Our concern is for our own safety, ourselves our neighbors and our small community here in Hancock as well as our clients. Yes, we will experience heavy financial losses, but in the long term, we will, with clear conscious, know we are doing everything within our own control to minimize the risks to ourselves, our neighbors and our community. We thank everyone for your understanding and we look forward to the time when we will be able to be reunited with our family and friends. Ben and Cindy Rinker

I was on a conference call yesterday with some fellow guides and area stakeholders to discuss some of these very issues addressed in this article. Know the hazard and assess the risk your actions may have on others. #stayathome.

A little too early for these yet, they will be here in a few weeks, soon as this winter weather decides to move on.

Home sweet home!

East Branch Outfitters 01.08.2020

We hope all of you are coping best you can in this crazy situation. We will be closed for as long as it requires. All reservations will be rescheduled. In the meantime, if you choose to get out and enjoy the outdoors, Just keep it local and eliminate the potential of cross contamination. Destination populations and local residents who live in and around the Upper Delaware, Lehigh and many other destinations have been isolated to a degree. Keep thier/our/your safety in mind. Recreate responsibly, the rivers and the fish and wildlife will be just fine until you can safely return.

East Branch Outfitters 01.07.2020

Ive been a ghost on FB for this past season. Cindy and I are running our B&B and guide service East Branch Outfitters while juggling a new addition to our munda...ne lifestyle. I didnt want to break any rules. Our attorney gave us the green light and so now we can start to tell our story. We got our license to grow hemp here in Hancock in February 2019. We broke ground for our greenhouse on March 26th under the watchful eye of Jacksn, our site supervisor. The greenhouse was completed and ready to start seeds by the first week of May. The first pass with the tractor on this virgin field revealed a treasure from the past. We hoped it was a sign of good luck! We are farmers..bump ba dump bump bump bump bump! See more

East Branch Outfitters 18.06.2020

It starts with the right seed. Genetics are key. Day one of the greenhouse ops. 70,000 seeds of five different strains started for our crop. Some of these seedlings will be distributed to other farms in our network.

I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to capture this incredable transformation of this Isonichia nymph into the dun. And I am honored to be a part of the soon to be released documentary, "Land of Little Rivers" which showcases our beautiful rivers and some of the people that share this passion.

East Branch Outfitters 23.02.2020

Truly saddened by the train derailment and subsequent diesel spill on our sister river, the West branch. Thankful no one was injured. It could have been much worse. The diesel fuel will dissipate and evaporate over the next few weeks.

East Branch Outfitters 16.02.2020

Update on the train derailment on the WB. Thanks for the pics Jay! So the spill is limited to the diesel fuel from the locomotives that are derailed along with 14 other cars. None of which are "in the river". The run off of the spill is flowing into a small tributary of the West Branch.

Respect Private Property is a principal we can all get behind (I would hope). When it comes to fishing and access, the same rules apply. A common misconception is "once I'm in the water, I can wade wherever I want below the high water mark" or "I can anchor and get out and wade wherever I want." Maybe so in some states but not in N.Y.!! Know where you are not where you're from. Public fishing maps from NYDEC and clearly marked access points are available for those who take the time and due diligence to understand. Common courtesy and mutual Respect to AND from landowners, anglers and other boaters and floaters will help keep our public rivers and waterways enjoyable for those that seek out and revere its awesome beauty. Scanners like this will be used by the DEC and some licensed guides to record recaptures of tagged trout. It's a simple concept really. By enabling the GPS settings on your camera, you take a picture of the number on the scanner at the time and location of the catch (and release) and email the photo to the DEC Region 4 fisheries. Easier than writing this post!

NYDEC is focusing resources on the Upper Delaware. Public meeting scheduled in Hancock. Thanks to all that have been on the front line to make this happen. PLEASE SHARE. "DEC TO HOST UPPER DELAWARE RIVER SYSTEM TROUT FISHERY MEETING ... Meeting to Take Place on Tuesday, March 13 in Hancock The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that the agency is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, March 13, to outline plans for upcoming fisheries work on the Upper Delaware River system. The meeting will be held at Hancock High School, 67 Education Lane, Hancock NY, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Upper Delaware River system is made up of two tailwater rivers, the East and West branches, which converge in Hancock to form the main stem of the Delaware River. At the meeting, biologists will outline a comprehensive fisheries investigation plan to assess the current status of the wild trout fishery. Developed collaboratively by DEC and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the plan will be completed over the next three years. The plan includes survey activities such as monthly electrofishing, spring, and fall redd counts (measures of trout spawning activity), trout tagging, and an angler creel survey. The purpose of this intensive effort is to gather information to develop a new fisheries management plan for the trout fishery of the Upper Delaware system. The meeting will offer anglers and the public the opportunity to ask questions about the upcoming work and learn about how they can support the investigation plan. Copies of the investigation plan are available at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/112782.html. Questions can be sent to Chris VanMaaren, DEC Region 4 Fisheries Manager, 65561 State Hwy 10, Stamford, NY 12167, or emailed [email protected].

NYS DEC to host a public meeting in Hancock, NY Wed., April 19 , 6:30PM at the high school auditorium to discuss current trout fishing rules on the Upper Delawa...re system. Please attend this special meeting to voice your opinion on current trout fishing regulations and advocate for new management approach to help sustain a healthy "wild trout" fishery on the Upper Delaware River. East Branch Outfitters 19.04.2019

Today is a landmark day for the Upper Delaware River and the science needed to manage this cold water ecosystem. Tagging wild trout began today on the West Branch of the Delaware River. In an effort to better understand the movement of wild trout within the Upper Delaware River system, NYDEC Region 4 fisheries biologists Chris VanMarren and Tim Pokorny along with the help of Jeff Skelding from FUDR, Rich Thomas from NJTU and local guide Ben Rinker were able to tag several wil...d trout today during a day of streamer fishing on the West Branch. This marks the beginning of a minimum 3 year effort to tag wild rainbow and brown trout in the nearly 80 miles of cold water habitat in the Upper Delaware. A small capsule, surgically implanted into the trout called a PIT tag will give each fish a unique identity . The tag is harmless to the fish and not visible to predators and will stay with the fish throughout its lifetime giving the scientists valuable insights on how these wild trout move throughout the river ecosystem, spawning tributaries and cold water refuges during the warmer periods of the year.
