Patient families and staff enjoyed a rare sighting of a bald eagle on the grounds of the Kanas Center for Hospice Care. We’re thrilled that these beautiful birds are no longer endangered and can be seen soaring through the sky on the East End. #eastendhospice #30years #kanascenterforhospicecare #baldeagles #soaring #hospice #nature

LIVE ON ZOOM Tuesday, 3.30.21, 6PM with Mary Crosby, President & CEO and Dr. Louis Avvent...
I didn’t know what to expect six years ago when I was hired by East End Hospice to oversee the facilities at its new state-of-the-art Kanas Center for Hospice Care. My job was to deal with contractors and vendors, and make sure all systems were kept in top shape. I found it sad to see what our patients and their loved ones faced, but was constantly amazed at how hospice care helped ease the way for them. I experienced this firsthand last August when my sister-in-law was a Kan...as patient. The staff’s teamwork in dealing with patients and their families is truly uplifting, and I’m proud to be considered part of the team. My role is to insure that the comfort and care and serene atmosphere the staff provides isn’t disrupted by equipment failure or other maintenance issues. I have to anticipate problems and respond immediately to emergency calls at all hours and there are plenty of them. It’s a big job it keeps me very busy. But it’s a job that I feel was meant for me. John Peters is East End Hospice’s facilities coordinator charged with managing operations at all of its buildings. One of 10 children in a construction family, he worked with his siblings after high school and eventually joined the Bricklayers Union. Ten years later he suffered a serious on-the-job injury, followed by a bout with cancer. In 2015, back on his feet, he answered an EEH ad and was hired as part-time facilities coordinator for its soon-to-open Kanas Center for Hospice Care. Within months his position became full-time and has since grown to include all other EEH buildings. As part of his expanded role, John has not only kept the Kansas Center running smoothly, he has converted a once-cramped storefront into airy new offices for EEH’s development and bereavement staffs, transformed a tile store into a spacious new home for EEH’s thrift shop, and refurbished EEH’s outdated administrative headquarters. John is also known among the EEH staff and volunteers for his thoughtful and meaningful acts. Unasked, he’s been known to shovel snow off nurses’ cars before their shifts ended; to replace a car headlight so a patient’s family member could drive home safely at night; and install a window air conditioner in a patient’s home on a scorching summer day. But perhaps John’s proudest contribution to EEH is the volunteer spirit of his two oldest daughters, who plan to work with bereaved youngsters at Camp Good Grief this summer
Throwback Thursday circa April 2015 East End Hospice Leadership tour construction progress of the Kanas Center for Hospice Care. One year later, the doors open to the state-of-the-art facility featuring eight private patient suites fully equipped to manage patients' end-of-life and provide all the services you would expect in a hospital in a more intimate and specialized, home-like setting. Fast forward five years and 1,000 patients and families later, the Kanas Center continues to provide expert care, compassion and comfort. #eastendhospice #hospice #30years #HPCANYS #NHPCO @eastendhospice
