For me, hospice is a very special kind of nursing. Our goal, our mission, is to provide our patients and their families with quality care and heartfelt compassion as they face the final stages of life. We only have one opportunity to make this difficult journey a peaceful and dignified experience for them, so it's important that we approach each patient based on their individual needs and wishes. I take great pride in knowing that our patients and their loved ones are well t...aken care of; and that their needs are met -- spiritually, physically, and emotionally. --------------------- Caitlin O'Connor is the Nurse Manager at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care. A chemotherapy-certified RN, she worked in oncology for seven years before being hired by East End Hospice in late 2015 to join the staff of its soon-to-open Kanas Center. After two years there and a two-year stint visiting EEH patients in their homes, Caitlin was called back to Kanas to serve as it Nurse Manager, supervising a staff of 10 nurses. One of her first priorities in her new job was to have two of Kanas's rooms adapted for the care of COVID-19 patients. In addition to our 30th Anniversary of East End Hospice, we celebrate the 5-year milestone inpatient facility East End Hospice's Kanas Center for Hospice Care. #eastendhospice @eastendhospice #hospice #30years #5years #kanascenterforhospicecare #NHPCO #HCAPNYS

I didn’t know what to expect six years ago when I was hired by East End Hospice to oversee the facilities at its new state-of-the-art Kanas Center for Hospice Care. My job was to deal with contractors and vendors, and make sure all systems were kept in top shape. I found it sad to see what our patients and their loved ones faced, but was constantly amazed at how hospice care helped ease the way for them. I experienced this firsthand last August when my sister-in-law was a Kan...as patient. The staff’s teamwork in dealing with patients and their families is truly uplifting, and I’m proud to be considered part of the team. My role is to insure that the comfort and care and serene atmosphere the staff provides isn’t disrupted by equipment failure or other maintenance issues. I have to anticipate problems and respond immediately to emergency calls at all hours and there are plenty of them. It’s a big job it keeps me very busy. But it’s a job that I feel was meant for me. John Peters is East End Hospice’s facilities coordinator charged with managing operations at all of its buildings. One of 10 children in a construction family, he worked with his siblings after high school and eventually joined the Bricklayers Union. Ten years later he suffered a serious on-the-job injury, followed by a bout with cancer. In 2015, back on his feet, he answered an EEH ad and was hired as part-time facilities coordinator for its soon-to-open Kanas Center for Hospice Care. Within months his position became full-time and has since grown to include all other EEH buildings. As part of his expanded role, John has not only kept the Kansas Center running smoothly, he has converted a once-cramped storefront into airy new offices for EEH’s development and bereavement staffs, transformed a tile store into a spacious new home for EEH’s thrift shop, and refurbished EEH’s outdated administrative headquarters. John is also known among the EEH staff and volunteers for his thoughtful and meaningful acts. Unasked, he’s been known to shovel snow off nurses’ cars before their shifts ended; to replace a car headlight so a patient’s family member could drive home safely at night; and install a window air conditioner in a patient’s home on a scorching summer day. But perhaps John’s proudest contribution to EEH is the volunteer spirit of his two oldest daughters, who plan to work with bereaved youngsters at Camp Good Grief this summer. #eastendhospice #30years #hospice #SpecialKindOfCaring

They improve the lives of patients, families and friends, as well as those who are grieving. They also help EEH run smoothly and assist with administrative tasks, fundraising, the thrift shop, and the Kanas Center for Hospice Care.
