Our fan art this week is by Damian Drewniak of Poland for her beautiful Hopperesque photo. She asks the viewer "Regret, sadness or maybe guilt? WHAT do you think?" You can see more of her photography at https://www.instagram.com/drewniakdamian/ It inspires us that Edward Hopper continues to influence artists still, more than a half-century after his death. Share your images with us by tagging us at @edwardhopperhouse or send us a direct message. We share one here every Friday.

#TBT Young Edward Hopper, age 7, was in second grade in this photo at Liberty Elementary here in Nyack NY, 1899. His parents introduced him and his sister, Marion, to the arts early in life and noticed his talent as early as age five. (pictured: third in from the left on the second row)

On today’s Instagram Live, Janine Napierkowski discussed Edward Hopper’s 1927 Automat which was shown for the first time on Valentine’s Day in 1927 at the Rehn Gallery in New York City. Janine also shared a lovely and poignant poem by Catherine Chandler inspired by his painting. An excerpt is below. To read the entire poem, visit bit.ly/automat_poem Edward Hopper’s Automat by Catherine Chandler... One does not see the gleaming wall of glass, it’s nickel slots and plates of apple pie, the scores of harried customers who pass. Reflected in the window’s blackened eye, two rows of matching ceiling fixtures light a way to nowhere through the city night. Inscrutable as an unsculptured stone, between the brass-railed stairway and the door, we see a woman sitting all alone, a quiet presence in the stark décor. Her posture mimics, spiritless and still, the fresh fruit posing on the window sill. #edwardhopper #automat #valentinesday #nycartist #catherinechandler #poem #edwardhopperinspired #edwardhopperesque #edwardhopperhouse

We're partnering with Rockland Center for the Arts on "Edward Hopper: A Virtual Lecture" held via Zoom on Feb 11th at 7pm. Tickets: $10 http://bit.ly/ehh_roca_lecture Using Hopper’s paintings as inspiration, Juliana Roth, EHH Chief Storyteller, will explore the ways stories are constructed by and for the subjects held in iconic Rockland-raised painter Edward Hopper’s frame. We'll also discuss the lives of Marion Hopper (his sister) and Jo Nivison Hopper (his wife, a fellow painter) who kept very detailed journals and logs, asking what it takes for an object to be considered art and how we can explore the possibility for art within our own lives.
