If I had gone to the Games and failed, there wouldn’t be anyone to follow in my footsteps. It encouraged the rest of the women to work harder and fight harder. Specializing in the high jump, Alice Coachman was the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Initially unable to access proper training or participate in organized sports due to her race and gender, Coachman used what was available to her, running shoeless along the dirt roads near her home and using homemad...e equipment to practice her jumping. Eventually, she was able to join her high school track team, where she developed so quickly that within a year she caught the attention of the Tuskegee Institute, who offered her a scholarship that required she clean facilities and mend uniforms while continuing her training. Coachman racked up wins and records at home, but was unable to compete abroad due to the outbreak of World War II, which also cancelled both the 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games, where she would have been a favorite for gold. She finally got her chance on the Olympic stage in 1948, where she easily won gold in the high jump. This catapulted her to celebrity status in the United States, where she was honored by parades across the country and invited to meet President Truman and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. She soon became the first Black woman to endorse an international product when she was signed as a spokesperson by Coca-Cola. Coachman has been inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame, and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. In the lead-up to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, she was honored as one of the 100 greatest Olympians. She is credited with opening the door for the many Black women track stars who have achieved international fame and success since her gold medal victory. #blackhistorymonth #inspirationalwomen #womeninsports

When we show up, act boldly, and practice the best ways to be wrong, we fail forward. No matter where we end up, we’ve grown from where we began. Internationally renowned for her efforts in combatting voter suppression, Stacey Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007-2017 before becoming the first Black woman to be a major-party gubernatorial nominee in 2018. After her loss, she founded Fair Fight Action to fight voter suppression in Georgia and Texas.... Abrams’s star continued to rise, as in 2019, she became the first Black woman to deliver a response to the State of the Union Address. And her efforts to bolster voter turnout and combat voter suppression were widely credited with assisting Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election and the Democratic wins in the Georgia run-offs. Most recently, Abrams was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in fighting voter suppression. Outside of the voting booth, Abrams has exercised her creative muscles and authored a number of award-winning romance novels under the pen name Selena Montgomery. She has also published two books under her own name, Minority Leader: How to Lead from the Outside and Make Real Change and Our Time Is Now: Power, Purpose, and the Fight for a Fair America. #blackhistorymonth #inspirationalwomen #votingrights
