For a number of years I've been working for NY State Division of Criminal Justice Services on their Accreditation Program. Last Thursday I was in Albany working with them on a project, when I became aware of a report that the Office of the Comptroller had done. To my knowledge this was the first time that the Comptroller had ever gone to police departments and tested their evidence/property room inventories and procedures. Ten agencies were tested, and the results overall wer...e not the best. One agency had 13 firearms missing, another had 23 items of drug evidence missing, and another had 17 cases where currency (cash) was missing. One agency actual had $63,400 that they could not account for, and another was missing four vehicles. Of the ten agencies visited, only two had 0% of missing items. One was the Town of Irondequoit. I did the Accreditation Assessment on the Irondequoit Police Dept, a number of years ago and they are a very affluent, and squared away agency. The other agency that had 0% missing was none other than my former employer the ELMIRA POLICE DEPARTMENT!!!! To give some perspective agencies might take in thousands of items of evidence in a single year. However of the 430 items of evidence that were selected for testing, the EPD was able to find every single one. I salute the men and women of the EPD who have to collect - bag and tag all that crap, and also to the Evidence Clerks who have to keep track of all that stuff. Job well done!! See more

The October 22nd meeting of the Retired Officers Association was well attended by the membership. We conducted business, then shared a nice dinner and good conversation. It was a nice evening! The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 18th, 6pm at Manzaris.

All, The next meeting of the EPD Retired Officers Association will be this Monday, June 17, 6pm at Manzaris. This will be the last meeting of our fiscal year. There will be no meetings in July or August, then we will begin the new fiscal year in September. The September meeting will be on Monday, Sept 9, 6pm at Manzaris. Our May 16 meeting was a bust, as no board members made it to the meeting. Thus no association business could be addressed. For the members that showed..., my apologies that none of the board members could make it. Thank you, Jim Wandell Secretary EPDROA
