#HUMANRIGHTSDAY Chilean arpilleras derive from a popular art tradition common throughout many countries in Latin America. Often depicting scenes from daily life, these decorative wall hangings are created from scraps of cloth mounted on burlap from which they drive their name. However, emerging in the 1970s, Chilean arpilleras developed as a form of political protest, and a means of expressing dissent under the military junta of General Augusto Pinochet. Most were produced ...by anonymous women who gathered at workshops associated with the Catholic Church that provided a space for healing and collective mourning. Common themes depicted include images of life under dictatorship; the experience of exile; mourning and the search for disappeared family members; and demonstrations and marches, as in the case of this example from El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection. . . . . "...they approached art as politically instrumental and found ways to put it into popular circulation. They took the role of artist and activist to be inseparable. Although the range of subjects Taller artists tackled was broad, revolution was the common theme." - Holland Cotter for The New York Times .
