For Immediate Release: Thursday, August 3, 2017 Contact Information for Bathing Beaches on Owasco Lake The Cayuga County Health Department regulates five public bathing beaches on both Owasco Lake and Cayuga Lake. Due to the presence of significant amounts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) this year, most of the bathing beaches have been closed at least once so far this season. We will no longer be issuing press releases this season notifying whether public beaches are open or closed due to presence of HABs. The reason for this is that the frequency of HABs and the time period for re-opening can change rapidly based on environmental conditions. The most accurate information regarding a beach being open is best provided directly by the beach. Before heading out to one of the public bathing beaches, the public is advised to contact them directly to see if they are open for swimming.
