100 Years Ago Today January 6, 1921 An exile from his own country under the hardships of war and revolution, Sergei Rachmaninoff, the noted Russian pianist, c...omposer and conductor, has returned to America after nine years of absence. Rachmaninoff, whom many consider the world’s greatest pianist, will appear at Kalurah Temple on Jan. 25. George Lasky, 13 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lasky of 63 Dickinson street, who has been missing since last Tuesday, returned home this morning from an impromptu visit to relatives in Scranton, Pa. Since his disappearance Tuesday after a reprimand the night before in the form of a whipping from his father, his mother had been prostrated and in bed. George came home late Monday night after he had visited the Boys’ club and the Kalurah Komic Karnival and received moral restraint from his father. Next morning he told his playmates he was going to run away if it happened again. He decided later to waive the encore and go anyway. Labor trouble broke out this morning in the plant of the Ideal Clothing company at the corner of Wall and Henry streets, due to activities of representatives of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers. Binghamton has its first case of smallpox for many a day. Just before Christmas W.H. Snook came to this city from Iowa. He was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Doremus at 41 Baldwin street in the Sixth Ward and several days ago became ill. L. Johnson who had blue suit pressed, please return trousers and get his own. W.B. Webster, 242 Washington St.

100 Years Ago Today January 5, 1921 Bolshevick literature of the most radical nature is being circulated through this city in an endeavor to ferment disconten...t among the unemployed, according to several citizens from the South Side of the city who have found pamphlets near their doorways. The pamphlet was addressed to those out of work, and appealed to them to rise and assist in the overthrow of the capitalist government of the United States by means of mass action, demonstration, protests, mass strikes, and culminating finally in open collision with the capitalist state with armed insurrection and war. The pamphlet is issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of America. Members of the so-called Communist party, it is reported, are particularly active in the First Ward and meetings are held each week with increasing membership since the wave of unemployment began to roll across the country. Two alleged gambling establishments, which have catered exclusively to the trade of the High School boys and boys under 16 years of age, have been operating in parts of the city for several weeks. Robert Kukowski of 129 Susquehanna street and Ray French of 40 Wall street have been arrested, charged with being common gamblers. Twelve boys have been accused of having frequented the establishments. Seven of these boys are students in the Binghamton Central High school, who come from moderately well-to-do families. Broome County milk producers are beginning to worry over the prospective ice shortage. Formal presentation to the city of Binghamton of the bronze tablet of Theodore Roosevelt, will be made tonight at a meeting of Spanish War Veterans in the State Armory. The only stipulation with the presentation is that it be placed in one of the public schools. The High school has been selected as the most suitable building. Rumors to the effect that the Endicott Johnson medical department soon will be placed on a self-supporting basis by charging fees for physicians’ calls are denied by George F. Johnson, who is quoted as saying that I will pay the deficit from my own pocket if necessary.
