A Go FundMe has been setup to provide assistance to the family of Spring Valley Firefighter Jared Lloyd. He made the ultimate sacrifice to save the lives of citizens in our community, and leaves behind 2 young sons. We will do all we can to help support them through this tragic time and beyond.

The Officers and Members of the Suffern Volunteer Hose Company send our deepest condolences to members of the Columbian Engine Co. #1, the Spring Valley Fire Department, and the family and friends of Firefighter Jared Lloyd. Firefighter J. Lloyd responded first due to a structure fire at Evergreen Home for Adults in the early morning of March 23rd. The first arriving crews were met with heavy fire load and dozens of occupants stuck within the building. Firefighters valiantly... rescued trapped victims and continued to go back into the building to ensure everyone was rescued. Unfortunately, while attempting to rescue a trapped occupant, Firefighter J. Lloyd became lost and was not able to be rescued due to the heavy fire conditions. After having saved numerous victims, Firefighter J. Lloyd made the ultimate sacrifice. The courage, bravery, and dedication Firefighter Lloyd displayed should be an example for each and every one of us. We send our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Jared Lloyd, and we all mourn with you. We will always remember Jared Lloyd, the hero. Rest easy brother. See more

This past Monday, March 1st, 2021, marked 50 years of active service for Ex-Chief Bruce McClintock. Bruce joined the Suffern Fire Department in March of 1968. Bruce served as President of the Hose Company from 1973-1975, Captain of the Hose Company from 1978-1981, and ultimately Chief of the Suffern Fire Department 2002-2004. Over the years Bruce has served both the company and department on various committees and in different positions, and currently uses his decades of expe...rience to serve as one of the Department Safety Officers. Bruce is a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. In 2018 Mayor Markunas presented Bruce with the Andrew Haggerty Award for a lifetime of outstanding community service. Bruce is truly a role model and an inspiration to all members of the Suffern Hose Company, both new and old. Congratulations Bruce! See more

A Message From Suffern Fire Department Chief Jeremy Kaufer - The Suffern Fire Department encourages residents to adopt a fire hydrant near their home or busi...ness and keep snow shoveled away from them during the winter season. Please make it a point to uncover your fire hydrant(s) after every snowfall. Clear a path approximately 3 feet around the hydrant. These actions will allow the fire department to quickly locate the fire hydrant, obtain a water supply for firefighting activities, and give the fire department room to work should the need arise.

Photos taken this afternoon of fire hydrants around the Village of Suffern both covered by snow and cleared off. The importance of clearing the snow from fire hydrants needs no explaining. Half of these hydrants can barely be seen from the road. It is imperative that you shovel out your nearest fire hydrant. Please shovel out 3’ around the hydrant as well as a path to the street. This will ensure firefighters don’t lose precious moments finding and shoveling out fire hydrants.

With the upcoming storm projected to hit our area tomorrow, just a friendly reminder to clear the snow from around fire hydrants. Having a clear fire hydrant will allow for a faster response should a fire occur.

A message from Mayor Ed Markunas, Village of Suffern employee, Private First-Class Michael Stewart, was called to active duty as a member of the New York State... Army National Guard to protect our Nation’s Capital in the weeks ahead. To honor Michael, I am asking employees of the Village of Suffern to wear red on Friday, January 15. I am asking everyone to wear red to symbolize RED which stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. As a united Village staff, I want to recognize Michael and other National Guard members who were called to active duty at this time, along with our active duty military service men and women and law enforcement personnel that bravely put their lives on the line to defend our Constitution. Thousands of National Guard members have been called to Washington to provide security. I am proud that Village of Suffern employee Michael Stewart is serving as a member of our Nation’s National Guard and I am proud to honor him on Friday. Please join us. Thank you, Mayor Ed Markunas
