"Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. And all ate and were filled." As part of our participation in The Good Book Club, we’re highlighting some of the many amazing congregations named for St. Mark throughout the season of Epiphany. Any photos are from 2019 or earlier. Today: Learn more about St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Basking Ridge, in the Diocese of New Jersey. Thinking about the feeding of the five thousand, this congregation came to mind right away: Looking at who we are, and at the practices that make up our identity, we realize that we major in food. Our outreach ministries are largely composed of feeding ministries, bringing nourishment to the hungry through soup kitchens and the Food Bank. Our fellowship opportunities are often centered around great food and drink, made by loving hands and shared with warm hearts. When someone in the congregation is sick, or going through a difficult time, other parishioners often show support for them with a gift of a dinner. Our worship is centered week-by-week on the Sacred Meal of Holy Communion. We see this identity as a gift from God. And, we see this as our calling from God: to nourish the hungry, and to create a space for us, and others, to be nourished by God’s spirit.
