People turn on their televisions and see food bankers and food banks meeting the need, said Katie Fitzgerald, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Feeding America. But what I think people don’t realize is that these men and women, who are either staff or the limited volunteer corps that we have, are really first responders, and they’re exhausted. "There is never enough that you can do, no matter what. Everything helps." Shayne Durkin is a volunteer at Ulster Immigrant Defense Network, and she wrote about her experience in the Onteora High School newspaper, The Talon. Thank you, Shayne, for your hard work and words about making a difference! You can read her piece here: http://ecny.charity/UIDN-article-2021... (Shayne's multi-talented - she also took this photo and generously permitted us to use it.)

The God in Action Food Distribution Alliance at Grace/ La Gracia Episcopal Church in White Plains was founded to meet emergency food needs in their community, but they've gone a step further, offering free COVID testing, including antibody testing as seen here. This is just one of the ways our partner programs provide holistic, comprehensive care - including healthcare - to those in need. #ECNY #EpiscopalCharities #nonprofit #episcopal #COVID19 #COVIDtest

Today we honor the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, whose death signified the creation of a new kind of justice. Jesus taught us to turn the other cheek, even giving up his life. This is not the way many expected a Savior to behave. His death was not "fair." But Jesus' acceptance of his death created a new paradigm, one that taught us that punitive justice is not truly justice at all while highlighting the tragedy of a life lost. His death prompted many questions we still grapple with: What is justice? What does it mean to be "guilty"? We celebrate Good Friday, then, not because of its destruction, but because through his death, Jesus created "a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11) for us: the possibility of a life not governed by death. #ECNY #EpiscopalCharities #nonprofit #charity #GoodFriday #reflection

Today it's Thanksgiving, and we all have so much to be grateful for. But first, it's important to acknowledge that we'll be celebrating this holiday safely in homes that are built on occupied Lenape land. We acknowledge, with the humility required of us by Jesus, that this holiday of gratitude paints an incomplete historical picture. In that spirit, we are thankful for the work our programs, volunteers, clergy, and guests do to create communities of care to all of God's peo...ple. For more information about the Episcopal Church's work with indigenous communities, you can visit the link in our bio.

It's the second Saturday of the month, which means @saintjamesfordham's Food Pantry is giving out 7,000 meals worth of healthy food in just over an hour. They've been aided since April by EC Volunteers, who, as always, are pre-screened and trained. Providing volunteers is just one way we support the essential work our programs do, especially in these difficult economic circumstances - Fr. Matt reports that the program has seen TWICE the number of people in need since the outbreak of COVID-19. If you're interested in safely volunteering or your program needs volunteers, let us know!
