I was sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Charles B. Hammond, a giant in the field of OB/GYN and reproductive medicine. His research helped to cure gestational trophoblastic disease, previously a nearly universally fatal condition. He was Chair of @dukeuniversity OB/GYN and president of @acog_org and @americansocietyforreprodmed He was also a great mentor who used to take interns in his GYN clinic. I’ll never forget those sessions from ~15 years ago. Rest well Dr. Hammond @dukeobgynresidency https://obgyn.duke.edu//announcing-passing-charles-b-hammo
I recently spoke to @forbes about #ColumbiaFertility survey of fertility patients’ views on Covid-19 vaccines before and during pregnancy. More data is needed and pregnant women shouldn’t be excluded from future trials #innovatingforlife https://www.forbes.com//why-perceptions-of-the-coronavir/
So thankful for #science that I was able to receive my 2nd dose of the #moderna #covidvacccine The science and collaboration to develop this mRNA vaccine in record time is truly amazing. Our physicians have been speaking out recently on the safety of this vaccine and how it should not be withheld from women of reproductive age and pregnant women, even though they were excluded from the initial trial. I’m hoping that soon everyone who wants this vaccine will be able to receive it and receive protection. #innovatingforlife #columbiafertility
I had a stimulating discussion recently with Griffin Jones @grifjones of @fertilitybridge on academic vs. private practice in reproductive medicine...or to be more accurate academic and practice as it’s not necessarily such a dichotomy. At #ColumbiaFertility we try to combine the best of both worlds to continually improve and be #innovatingforlife . It was fun to reminisce over the past 10 years and discuss how I ended up where I am and where I see things going in the future. Shout out to @mrsi_meeting where I first met Griffin @angiebeltsosmd_fertility @evefeinberg . #ivf @dbsable see fertilitybridge.com for the podcast
Thankful for @sussexroyal Meghan Markle sharing her very personal experience of early pregnancy #loss in the @nytimes It’s always Ok, to ask, Are you Ok? #areyouok At #ColumbiaFertility our team led by Dr. Zev Williams is constantly working to find new ways to diagnose and prevent recurrent pregnancy loss. #innovatingforlife @drlorashahine #miscarriage #miscarriagesupport https://www.nytimes.com//op/meghan-markle-miscarriage.html
Important new study published in Cell out of @dietermeg Dr. Dieter Egli’s @columbiamed lab shows that despite the promise of Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology, we need to be very careful before applying it to #ivf : CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing in early human embryos leads to frequent loss of the targeted chromosome, indicating that human germline gene editing would pose a substantial risk for aneuploidy and other adverse genetic consequences. The eggs use...d in this study came from generous donors treated safely at #ColumbiaFertility. Our REI fellows do their research projects with Dr. Egli and we are so fortunate to have a great mentor for them and research collaboration. IVF with preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disease (PGT-M) is a safe and very effective treatment to prevent serious inherited genetic diseases. It should be more available and accessible for those at risk. The genetic testing in this study was performed by Dr. Nathan Treff’s team @treff.nathan at @genomicprediction #innovatingforlife @columbiaobgyn_residency See more
Several years ago I traveled to India for a weekend to give two lectures in cities more than 1,200 miles apart. It was a whirlwind trip with 20 hours of travel in each direction. This morning I was honored to give an invited lecture on Luteal Support after #IVF to a group of hundreds of genecologists in India. I missed the ceremonial opening ceremonies they have at their medical conferences and of course the amazing food, but I didn’t miss the jet lag. #columbiafertility #innovatingforlife @columbiamed
I’m not sure what’s more surreal: Watching myself give a live (pre-recorded) lecture at #ASRM2020 on #IVF culture media or being able to chat with my co-lecturer, Distinguished Professor David Gardner. Dr Gardner is one of the true pioneers of embryo culture media. The grading system we use for grading blastocysts is named after him. I tried to include some clinical perspective having been involved in some research studies involving culture media. There’s so much more room to improve in this field! Shout out to @juliagkim @thermanetwork fellow #10 @columbiaobgyn_residency @columbia @columbiamed @americansocietyforreprodmed ! #innovatingforlife
During this year’s virtual #ASRM2020 conference I got to watch a moving talk on Andy & Sofia about how one family used preimplantation genetic testing to save and cure their oldest son Andy who suffered from x-linked NEMO deficiency. #ColumbiaFertility’s own Dr. Sinem Karipcin @sinemkaripcin_md recently wrote a reflection on the use of this technology with #IVF @americansocietyforreprodmed #innovatingforlife
Simpler times...1 year ago.
So excited to be invited to speak to the F. Bayard Carter Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists @dukeobgynresidency @dukeuniversity on The Future of IVF. So many familiar faces in the audience - just wish I could see them in person. #columbiafertility #innovatingforlife
Thanks for having me as a guest on your Just the Good Stuff podcast @rachlmansfield https://bit.ly/2GQwg7H
Congratulations to Drs. Doudna and Charpentier on their well-deserved Nobel Prize @nobelprize_org for their discoveries that led to the development of the CRISPR gene-editing system. This amazing technology has tremendous promise to help alleviate suffering from genetic disease. #womeninstem #innovatingforlife
I enjoyed reading A Cub Come True: An #IVF Story last night with Maddie. She’s been saying for years that she wants to be a reproductive endocrinologist so this was a review for her ;) She proudly pointed out a pregnant ape and the variety of types of families shown on the wall at the #fertilitydoctor office. Congratulations to the authors, both REI fellows, Dr. Eduardo Hariton @haritonmd and Pietro Bortoletto to help parents who went through #fertilitytreatment explain to their children how they came to be. https://www.amazon.com/Cub-Come-True//1735369306/ref=nodl_
Welcome to the #ColumbiaFertility team @evresh #bestfellows #innovatingforlife
What an honor to present Grand Rounds and answer questions from Dr. Phil Heine now the chair of OB/GYN at Wake University. He delivered Eli when he was MFM Division Director at Duke @dukeobgynresidency Time flies!
Busy morning. Next up is Grand Rounds at @wakeforestobgyn @wfuniversity on Using PGT-A to improve obstetrical outcomes after #IVF Thankful for iced coffee
If you can’t travel to Australia to give an invited lecture to the Fertility Society of Australia, the next best thing is to give it at 4:30 a.m. the topic is Why do (some) euploid embryos not implant? after #IVF #fertilitytreatment . Nearly 150 attendees joining live. Looking forward to the Q&A. Hoping to be there in person in 2021! #ColumbiaFertility #innovatingforlife
Virtual @columbia REI fellowship interviews via @zoom We have 9 amazing candidates from all around the country. First time wearing a tie in 5 months. #newnormal @columbiaobgyn_residency @columbiamed @bradighian #ColumbiaFertility #innovatingforlife
#nyc #breakfast #eggandcheese #coffee Time to go retrieve these eggs at #columbiafertility #ivf
Happy 42nd birthday to Louis Brown - the first #IVF baby. Her brave parents trusted in the late Sir Edwards (winner of the 2010 #NobelPrize ) and Dr. Patrick Steptoe. Because of their bravery millions of people have been able to build their families through IVF. Today is also known as World Embryologists Day. We thank all the amazing embryologists whose dedication and hard work continues to advance this field forward. #columbiafertility #innovatingforlife #ivfjourney #ttccommunity
