A vintage carousel originally carved at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum in North Tonawanda is being assembled in the new roundhouse at Canalside in Buffalo. It will be open to the public on May 28th for the first time in 65 years. You can also visit the nearby factory site in North Tonawanda (now a museum) to see a variety of wooden horses, the wood carving shop, and kiddie carrousel. The factory once shipped carrousels far and wide on the Erie Canal. https://buffalonews.com//article_ff197008-8d76-11eb-a902-0

Lock 17 in Little Falls was once the highest lift lock in the world. It lifts boats over 40.5 feet, the highest of any lock on the canals. #tbt #ThrowbackThursday Photo: NY Barge Canal, Lock E17, Little Falls

The Erie Canal Museum is looking for a two-year Research Fellow dedicated to advancing the Museum's goal of telling a more inclusive Erie Canal story. The Fellow must be passionate about ensuring that museums represent communities' full diversity and committed to expanding the narrative traditionally told by the Erie Canal Museum to include more about marginalized populations and environmental history. Which New York Governor (later to become President) said The present canal must be enlarged! in 1900? It was his declaration that helped move forward plans for the modernization and enlargement of the Erie Canal into the Barge Canal. #tbt #ThrowbackThursday Photo: NY Barge Canal Lock E28, Lyons

Only a few short weeks ago we shared a photo of a partially frozen Erie Canal here in Waterford. March certainly does come in like a lion and out like a lamb. Less than 2 months until canal season!

The original lock dimensions on the 22-mile Cayuga-Seneca Canal, constructed from 1826-1828, were identical to those of the Erie Canal, but they were made of wood rather than stone. Wood was plentiful in Upstate New York at the time, and it wasn’t the first or last time wood was used to make canal locks. Wood was used again in 1918 to make lock gates on the Cayuga-Seneca due to shortages created by WWI. #tbt #throwbackthursday

The beauty of light comes to the canal in Little Falls, with a popup art installation, Night Grass at Canal Place. Eighteen neon light sculptures created by artist, Alejandro Siña and commissioned by Daniel Preston, are intended to evoke hope in the midst of a very trying year. https://mylittlefalls.com/night-grass-comes-to-light-in-c/
