This Sunday is part seven in our series on Life in Community. The scripture is Philippians 2:1-10 and the message is about choosing to humbly work shoulder to shoulder and side by side. When we check the egos and the pride at the door . . . God will do amazing things through us! Erwin First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, NY www.erwinfirstchurch.org... Worship this week is all about compassion (see Romans 12:14-17). In community I am going to develop an awareness of the lives around me. I will choose to engage someone’s sorrow and I will choose to rejoice with those who are celebrating. Sometimes, when someone is hurting, we want to run the other way. Sometimes, when someone is rejoicing, we feel left out or jealous. Making the choice to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice is a critical element of living life in community.

This Sunday we continue our series on life in Community: We are called to live in Community and 1) I will allow God to work on my Character this is job one; 2) I will see the God given potential in everyone; and this week we look at Luke 19:1-10 and the story of Zacchaeus. The community principle is this: When I am wrong I’ll admit it, confess it, and make it right. Sometimes no one is wrong. Often times there are multiple right answers. But in life in Community when I have... harmed another, offended another, broken a relationship with another then I have the responsibility to seek reconciliation and do my best to make it right. St. Paul wrote in Romans: In so far as it is up to you live at peace with all people. This Sunday is World Communion Sunday and we will be having communion together for the first time since March. Here’s how: If you are worshipping on line: have bread and juice ready and we’ll walk you through communion at home. If you are worshipping in person: we have acquired communion kits with individual prepackaged wafer and juice. We’ll walk you through using them as part of Sunday’s Celebration See you when we gather. This Sunday is part three of our series on Community Covenant. First, we learned that we were created and called to be in community; second, we learned that a key to vital community is for each of us to be open to God working on our character and that it was important that I attend to that FIRST. This week’s key is to see the God given potential in every human being. There is a human tendency to marginalize those we don’t understand or who look different than us. ...When we allow God to open our eyes we begin to see that every human is precious to God and that every human is uniquely gifted to make a difference in the world. When I see others through God’s eyes, I see possibilities in everyone. This Sunday is part 2 of our Life in Community series. Galatians 5:22 speaks of the 9 fruit of the spirit. The expectation is that these 9 fruit are being formed and shaped with all Christ followers: The 9 are: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Through practicing the means of grace and the spiritual disciplines and the engagement of Christian community, the fruit of the spirit is being formed and shaped in each of us.... The key to life in community is that I will allow God to continuously work on my character. I will do this by attending to my own spiritual growth and development FIRST . . . before I try to fix someone else.
