European Union at the UN New York 09.05.2021

News: the 65th Commission on the Status of Women #CSW65 has adopted conclusions on women's participation and the elimination of violence. The EU would have preferred to see a much more ambitious outcome. The systematic attempts by some UN Member States to derail the process shows that the pushback against women’s rights continues.... We must redouble efforts to promote gender equality. The pushback will not impede the overwhelming momentum to achieve full gender equality. Next week’s #GenerationEquality Forum will present a vital moment for activists, feminists, youth and allies to achieve transformative change. The EU will take full part in these efforts. Today at the UN, we commemorated the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination #FightRacism. On the same day, European leaders held the first EU Anti-racism Summit, a kick-off moment for the implementation of the EU Anti-racism Action Plan. In the EU, we will continue to strongly oppose all forms of discrimination including on grounds of sex, race, ethnic or social origin, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, disability, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity. We reject all forms of incitement to violence or hatred, and hate speech, online and offline.

The humanitarian crisis in Central Sahel, covering Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, is one of the fastest growing in the world. Conflicts, food shortages, climatic... change, extreme poverty and the coronavirus outbreak are taking a heavy toll on local communities. Today, the EU, the UN, Denmark and Germany are meeting to draw attention to the crisis in an event that brings together donors, international organisations and the representatives of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. Attendees discuss the way forward and how the countries can get out of the spiral of violence and humanitarian crises they are currently facing. To that end, the EU pledges additional funding for humanitarian actions, as well as to address the food crisis in the region, in cooperation with the World Food Programme. The people of Sahel deserve our full attention. We continue to stand with them. #SahelNow

True to the rules and principles of the UN Charter, the EU reasserts that human rights are universal, indivisible, interdependent and interrelated. Without respect for human rights, there can be no lasting peace, reconciliation, no security nor stability, and no enduring development and prosperity.
