Approximately 5565% of those with a mutation in their BRCA1 gene (located on chromosome 17) and 45% of those with a mutation in their BRCA2 gene (located on chromosome 13) will develop breast cancer before their 70th birthdays, compared to 12% of all women. In addition, chances of ovarian canceronly around 1.3% in the wider populationare elevated to 1117% for those with the BRCA2 mutation and 39% for those with the BRCA1 mutation. What does that mean for fertility? Just h...aving one of these mutations doesn’t mean muchstudies have demonstrated that women with BRCA mutations have comparable AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) levels to other women, meaning their ovarian reserve probably isn’t affected. But canceror, more accurately, cancer treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeryputs patients' fertility at risk. That’s why many oncofertility (fertility and cancer) experts are now recommending that women who test positive for one of the BRCA mutations explore their options for fertility preservation. Jaclyn Shuman has completed her egg freezing cycle! She says: "I went into this journey embracing the unknown, and truly making a conscious effort to find joy in my many hormone shots and even embrace the tears that come along way. Dr. Klein predicted 8-13 retrieval, and 5-7 mature enough to be frozen. And he retrieved 20, and froze 11. The amount of love and satisfaction I have towards my body and @extendfertility staff is an overload of gratitude. I couldn't ask for a more amazing team of beautiful people who encouraged me along the way, and continued to build me up. So again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!"

"More than anything, I feel much freer to decide when I want to have kids than I did before. I feel like I can choose to have kids when I want to, and not feel pressure because I’m worried about waiting too long, or because I’m trying to do the math of how many kids I want to have and how far apart they need to be spaced before I get to an age where it might be harder. That’s really freeing as a woman."

Talia came to Extend Fertility in 2020 after quite a rollercoaster: in just over three years, she’d seen four doctors, had three surgeries, and experienced several chemical pregnancies and an early pregnancy loss. Happily, she was able to get and stay pregnant after working with Dr. Klein to address her primary fertility concernsuterine scarring and a thin liningbefore a frozen embryo transfer.
