Farmspot CSA 08.05.2021

Unfortunately there will NOT be a 2020/21 WINTER CSA SHARE. Golden Earthworm Organic Farm needs to take a breather after a very challenging growing season. Please stay tuned over the winter for news and info about the 2021 SUMMER SHARE. In the meantime, we are fortunate in Jackson Heights to have a wonderful year-round farmer's market for locally-grown food!#grownyc #jacksonheights #queens

Farm Spot peeps Help ban chemical pesticides from NYC parks! We are asking that constituents of District #25 (Jackson Heights and Elmhurst) please contact Councilman DANIEL DROMM’s office (ask to speak with Sebastian Maguire in Danny’s office):... 212-788-7066 718-803-6373 With the following ask: We are asking that Councilman Dromm co-sponsor Intro.1524 (a bill sponsored by Ben Kallos) which would eliminate the use of RoundUp (glyphosate) and other chemical pesticides in New York City Parks. We have 30 co-sponsors, and need 34 to have a hearing. Background on the bill here: 1. NYS passed a bill in 2010 prohibiting pesticides on all school properties and daycare centers in the state. New York City kids did not benefit from this law as they play on city park fields. As NYC kids already have a higher "body burden" of environmental toxins because they live in an urban environment where air quality is a huge issue, we want to provide for them the same protection from pesticides as all other kids in the state enjoy. 2. RoundUp herbicide is still being used extensively across all parks and other agencies within the five boroughsWith the recognition that RoundUp's active ingredient, glyphosate, causes non-hodgkins lymphoma in humans, there have been very high-profile lawsuits against Monsanto (the manufacturer) with settlements in the hundreds of millions of dollars, even a 2.2 billion settlement for a husband and wife who used the product regularly in their work. There are tens of thousands of similar lawsuits waiting. While I am not an attorney, I think there may be some liability for the city as they continue to ask workers to apply the herbicide. 3. Battery Park - this is a wonderful example of a NYC park that is maintained according to the provisions of Intro 1524. While owned by the city, Battery Park is maintained by a conservancy group who use only non-chemical methods and cultural practices for turf and trees to produce a gold standard for our parks. They have been maintaining BP for at least a decade. 4. Synthetic pesticides are made from fossil fuels and the amount used by the city is considerable. Moving to a new paradigm for managing natural spaces is in line with the city’s desire to reduce the use of fossil fuels. 5. New York can set the standard for other cities around the world. We have new products and even one-to-one product replacements to move away from chemical pesticides. The use of LEDs for weed control is a new and very effective control as well. Thanks for bringing this up with the councilman. We are very anxious to get those 34 names to trigger a hearing!
