What is an Aircraft Dispatcher? FAA Certificated Aircraft Dispatchers are employed by major airlines to exercise operational control for all scheduled flights. Operational control is the authority to initiate, conduct, and terminate a flight. The assigned dispatcher on duty will work with many different departments and personnel in an airline to manage a flight’s safe, on-time departure and arrival. While the airline captain is responsible for one flight at a time, a dispatc...her oversees many aircraft at once. Some of the responsibilities of an aircraft dispatcher include: Generating flight plans to accommodate route of flight, fuel calculations, winds, weather, maintenance issues, weight and balance, and airport delays. Coordinates with Air Traffic Control to Manage weather delays and routing or re-routing aircraft as necessary. Ensuring each aircraft is properly equipped, or that the flight planning is properly adjusted for maintenance issues. Monitoring flight progress and alerting the flight crew of changes in weather, airport delays, runway closures, etc. Canceling or delaying flights to accommodate weather and/or maintenance issues. Coordinate’s emergency situations with captain as necessary to ensure a safe outcome.
Does a certified Aircraft Dispatcher work in the ATC control tower? No they do not. They exercise operational control for major/regional airlines in a Operational Control Center (OCC). However, a FAA certificated Aircraft Dispatcher needs to know the role that the controller plays in the control tower. He/she needs to understand that a gate hold may delay the flight that he is responsible for. Or that the Washington Command Center may implement a Severe Weather Avoidance Plan for a the intended route of the assigned aircraft. While the Captain of a flight may be responsible for one flight the Aircraft Dispatcher is responsible for dozen of flights. And in order for him/her to perform there job they need to be thoroughly trained on the A,B,C's of the US Airspace.
