I still can't believe that a two year quest for this great New York buck has come to an end. I wounded this buck on December 8th last season, while still-huntin...g on snowshoes in two-feet of heavy snow. I found out that shooting a bow on snowshoes is not that easy because you can't move your feet when the buck is close. I made a poor shot, as the buck lunged right when I was releasing the arrow. We tracked him for three days. He bled in the snow for two weeks and didn't die. This started a months long quest to find him. I logged over 30 miles in every thicket I had permission in, looking for him ultimately seeing him on March 12th alive and finding his right side shed a week later. He moved right back into his old stomping ground this year. He was always visible in daytime photos on the new and full moons, and I knew my best time to kill him was during those 48 hour periods. Sunday morning, under a full moon, I glimpsed him trailing a doe, seeing him three times over the next 8 hours. I changed stands five times over the course of the day, ultimately faced with the buck and doe possibly heading the wrong way at 200 yds out with only 45 minutes of daylight left. I was hesitant but I gave a single, soft tending grunt and to my surprise the doe raised her head and sprinted right to the base of my stand. I knew then, the buck would come. He did but I couldn't move as he passed to my right and went behind my stand. He was chomping grass at a mere 10 feet but on the wrong side of the tree. I kept telling myself to be patient, not to move at all. The doe was my ace card. I held my cool and froze completely, but just then the buck saw something he didn't like. He spooked and ran 70 yds out, stopped and turned to look. My heart sank as I watched him at the edge of bow-range. I dared not move a muscle. I strained my eyes downward and my new best friend doe was still at the bottom of my tree. I knew he would come for his girl and he did. I had one good window behind me at 35 yds and he was coming. I moved my fast-eddie back to 35 and drew the bow as he stepped behind the only limb left. I was still facing forward, but shot him on the move almost directly behind me. My Grim Reaper tipped VAP TKO SS hit him back and high, breaking his back. As he ran a short distance and fell, I could tell he couldn't get up. I made the decision to descend the stand and do my best sneak and run, stopping to kneel and thank God for his blessing before I shot him again through the lungs. As I watched him die, I wondered about the struggles we caused each other and the mark he made on me and the mark I put on him. I cried a little, wondering to myself whether I was shedding tears of sadness or Joy, knowing this quest had ended.. Certainly, a deer I will never forget! See more

Excellent summation by Joel Maxfield of the differences in arrow penetratiin and the subsequent drop when using heavier arrow weights. I wholeheartedly agree with this very thorough test. Personally, I prefer to shoot hunting arrows around the 450- 470 grain weights for whitetail deer. This yields an excellent blend of speed, momentum and kinetic energy.
Let's get some new Bowhunters into the sport!
