Direct sowing is one way to get a head start in the garden. The cold, wet weather of spring can hasten germination for some seeds, and many early crops might otherwise become bitter in summer heat. Direct sowing alongside a crop that's already growing (aka "succession sowing") also means more harvests! With several weeks to go before our last frost, we want to sow as much as we can now to maximize the growing season. In the Northeast, Radishes and Peas can be direct sown whil...e the cool weather holdsin addition to Raab, Spinach, and Arugula. By mid-April, we're adding rows of Chard, Beets, Lettuce, Carrots, and Parsnips. Borage, Bachelor's Button, Calendula, Spider Flower, Marigold, Morning Glory, Sweet Pea, and Johnny Jump-Ups are all flowers to sow now through May; the moisture and temperature fluctuations of spring will benefit germination. November 19 National Call-In Day: Urge Congress to Pass a Comprehensive COVID-19 Package that Includes a SNAP Boost NOW In recognition of Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, the National Low Income Housing Coalition and FRAC are hosting a National Call-in Day on Thursday, November 19, to urge Congress to quickly pass a comprehensive relief package that invests in nutrition assistance, housing, income support, state fiscal relief, and other critical needs. ... SNAP serves as the nation’s first line of defense against hunger. This proven program not only helps to put food on the table it also stimulates the economy. Your help is needed to continue to lift up the urgency to increase SNAP maximum benefits by 15 percent and the minimum monthly benefits from $16 to $30. Background: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has rejected the need to pass a comprehensive COVID-19 relief package, instead calling for a targeted bill that is similar to the inadequate, skinny COVID relief bill that twice failed to advance in the Senate. It is critical that a real, comprehensive pandemic relief bill passes immediately that directly supports families and individuals who are struggling from the health and economic fallout from the pandemic. Every day that passes, more families slip closer to economic disaster. Call your Members of Congress today. Actions to Take Today Your actions today can make a big difference in the lives of families and children who are facing hunger and homelessness. Use the call script and FRAC's sample social media messages below to tell your members of congress to pass a comprehensive COVID-19 package that includes a boost to SNAP now. Please share this call-in day information with your networks. Call Your Members of Congress: Find the phone #'s for your members of congress and use the script below: Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent from [town]. I am calling to urge the Member to pass a comprehensive COVID-19 relief bill that protects families and communities from economic disaster. Millions of families have lost their jobs and can’t afford their food, rent, and health care. Individuals and families need real, immediate help to weather this crisis and they need Congress and the administration to quickly enact a strong COVID relief bill. Any relief package must include SNAP benefit boosts. Thank you. Sample Social Media Posts: Tag your Members of Congress and the White House on social media with your message find their Twitter handles here. Use #COVIDrelief and #BoostSNAPNow. Check out FRAC’s social media resources. Click-to-Tweet: Food or housing? People shouldn’t have to choose. Tell Congress to immediately pass a comprehensive #COVIDrelief package to #BoostSNAPNow and provide #RentReliefNow.
