Did you know that SNAP benefits don't cover the cost of personal care, personal hygiene, or feminine hygiene items? The Care Necessities is a campaign to increase access to personal care and hygiene products for low-income New Yorkers and we need your help! Our friends at Bank of America have committed $25,000 in funding and are challenging the community to raise an additional $25,000 throughout the month of May to double the impact. You can make a monetary donation, donate hygiene items, or host a hygiene drive! Learn more here: https://foodbankofhudsonvalley.org/thecarenecessities/

Advocate: Publicly recommends or supports. That is exactly what Stop & Shop is to the food bank and it was no surprise when Stop & Shop chose to be an Advocate sponsor for our 6th Annual Farm to Fork Feast! Thank you to Stop & Shop for helping us work toward our mission and supporting those in need in the communities we serve. We're fortunate to have so many generous farmers in our service area who support our mission. This is a great article on gleaning from the Press Republican and mentions the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County. https://www.pressrepublican.com//article_2bd82018-4d3d-532

While we do not typically engage in broad conversations on Facebook, in this instance we feel we must correct several misinterpretations about the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. Most of the photos you may have seen circulating are from the summer. On August 4, there was a massive, multi-day power outage in our area. The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley lost power for three days. Sadly, all food in the freezer and cooler was ruined and had to be disposed. This required multiple... trips to the waste facility over several weeks. We were heartbroken to have to dispose of so much food, but the safety of our food supply and the safety of our clients is of the utmost importance to us. You may not be aware that most of the product at the Food Bank comes in the form of donations of unsaleable goods from the food industry. They donate items that are imperfect, overproduced, nearing code date, or in damaged packaging. The vast majority of this product is perfectly fine to distribute, but some of it cannot be kept and must be discarded. Although we regret having to dump any food, the reality is that all this good product (millions of pounds every year) would be dumped if not for the Food Bank. We lose some, but prevent massive amounts of food waste. We would like to thank ACME Markets for stepping forward and providing us with monetary support to replace the ruined supply from this outage. They, along with our employees, volunteers, and donor community are true heroes. We are so grateful for their support, hard work and dedication. If you are able, we invite you to volunteer at our facility to see firsthand our methods for sorting donations, and as always, if you have questions or concerns, we hope you will contact our parent organization, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. We can always use more volunteers, and your efforts help us sort and repack food and get it to our agencies more quickly. Since the beginning of the COVID crisis, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley has distributed 13.3 million pounds of food to those in need in our six county service area. This represents a 53% increase over last year. We will continue to meet this community need by supplying fresh, healthy and safe food to our neighbors for as long as necessary. Thank you. See more
