Howard Washington Thurman was a minister, civil rights leader, poet, educator, and much more. Rankin’s theology was grounded in nonviolence: his teachings fueled and motivated generations of civil rights activists and he served as a mentor to numerous movement leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (who is said to have kept a copy of Thurman’s 1949 book, Jesus and the Disinherited, in his pocket). Thurman was the first dean of Howard University’s Rankin Chapel, the hi...storic HBCU, from 1932-44. He also served on the faculty of the Howard University School of Divinity. In 1944, Thurman left Howard to embark on a visionary initiative: partnering with the Fellowship of Reconciliation to establish the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples. The San Francisco church -- whose congregation was made up of predominantly Black folks who had migrated to the Bay Area from Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas -- served as the foundation for a new interracial community of people in Northern California. Thurman traveled the world and connected with diverse spiritual communities and world leaders. He led a "Negro Delegation of Friendship" to South Asia in 1936, where he met Mohandas Gandhi. This meeting with Gandhi indoctrinated him with the importance of the use of nonviolent resistance to combat the racial inequities and pursue liberation for Black people in the United States. Thank you, Howard Thurman, for guiding and inspiring generations of leaders to the present day. #HowardThurman #peace #forusa #blackhistorymonth #bhm

Coretta Scott King has a deep and rich history in the nonviolent movement for justice. Coretta was a graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, with a B.A. in music and education. She used this music background to create and performed a series of freedom concerts which served as fundraisers for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). While she is often viewed as the spouse of Dr. Martin Luther King, Coretta Scott King was a dynamic leader in her own r...ight who spent much of her life traveling and advocating on issues of racial equality, ending war, and women's rights. In 1988 she served as head of the U.S. delegation of Women for a Meaningful Summit in Athens, Greece; and in 1990 she was co-convener of the Soviet-American Women’s Summit in Washington, DC. Her vocal critique of State violence and the intersections of racism, militarism, and materialism -- particularly her open opposition to the Vietnam war -- placed under FBI surveillance for years. Despite pushback from many sources, Mrs. King continued to use her voice and spent her time traveling across the globe to build partnerships for peace, justice, and gender equality. Following Dr. King’s murder, Mrs. King established The King Center, a memorial which focused on uplifting and continuing her husband’s legacy. She focused its message and program on nonviolent social change, and she would continue in this same spirit to push for the eventual creation of a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -- finally signed into law in 1983. Coretta Scott King’s legacy is one this world is better for having experienced -- we honor you! #corettascottking #peace #forusa #blackhistorymonth #bhm
