A portrait, San Francisco, 1975. 46 years ago, I was commissioned by the California Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) to make a 4 month photographic documen...tary about poverty in that state. I was walking in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco and this woman was hanging her laundry on a balcony. We spoke and she asked me to sit down. She told me that she sold her blood every week to pay for food and her bills. Now 46 years later unfortunately I don't remember her name and do not have notes to indicate. But, like today, as I look back over my life, I will never forget her and her story. We have all gone through a very tough year, but the pain of this past year has been unequal. Many have lost loved ones and many have lost jobs, income, housing, and any sense of security. If only all of us have could gain a sense of compassion, and empathy during these times, for those that have too little, and an understanding that a small percentage simply have too much. A year out since the beginning of this pandemic-it has been the working class people of our world that have saved our lives-not the CEO's, corporate class, and politicians that refuse to lift the minimum wage for those that have kept us alive.
