Greetings Mt Arab hikers! Spring will soon be upon the Adirondacks! Spring birds are already returning from the South. The New York State DEC reports that hiking activity last season on Mt Arab reached the highest levels in its history! Recapping last Summers season: prior records were broken with over 10,000 recorded hikers climbing Mt Arab! There were other unofficial but exciting records set: ... Here are a few most noteworthy observations : The trail to the summit had the least amount of litter observed vs the prior 30-40 years. Hikers of the mountain not only avoided littering, but they actually picked up any litter they spotted on the trail. Kudos to all who helped maintain the pristine character of the trail ! It is a wonderful change from the past! In another excellent trend , fewer dogs were observed off-leash vs prior years . Leased pets are always welcome on the mountain and trail. Leashing dogs is a necessity for a number of of reasons : Dogs may attack and kill or injure wildlife , trample flowers & rare fauna, leave excrement , injure other dogs or people. But Again, Kudos readers/hikers for the great job in this regard in 2020 Please keep up and even improve on the good work! The trail conditions will be muddy this Spring as winter snow melts, but there will still be many great hiking days this Spring . Finally: Thank you to all who have contributed to Friends Of Mt Arab: because of your continued financial support along with strong NY DEC help, we have been enabled to continue repairs and upgrades to the Fire Tower and the cabin. Further progress on improvements will be evident this year. Come climb the mountain and see for yourselves! Hope to see you on the trail!
Winter on Mt Arab
Mt Arab Pictures over the years and seasons:
Last Winter , 2020 , on Mt Arab
Looking back on 26 September 2020, Mt. Arab- Dick Bentley, FOMA Chairnan - Larry Lee, FOMA Treasurer - Herman Adele Lunan Vandenburgh, FOMA Director, have been Volunteering installing windows in the Tower. A lot of visitors climbed Mt. Arab this year. Thanks to some of the visitors who helped out by carrying windows up. Different groups tried to keep Social Distance. Most of the visitors had Masks on. There was a long line waiting to climb the tower. NO visitors allowed in the Tower Cab while Dick and Larry were working. (Photos by Sudjai Bentley) The job was completed on 4 October 2020).
Volunteer work on the Mount Arab Fire Tower windows by Dick Bentley, Larry Lee, and Herman Vandenburgh. Started in September and finished on 4 October 2020.
Retro: October 2019 from the summit of Mt Arab
It’s yet another beautiful day on the mountain! Lots of climbers, but plenty of space to maintain distance..... enjoy!
