In 1902, a 25-year-old engineer from New York named Willis Carrier invented the first modern air-conditioning system. The mechanical unit, which sent air through water-cooled coils, was not aimed at human comfort, however; it was designed to control humidity in the printing plant where he worked. The humidity in the Spring/Summer months at the Brooklyn printing plant wreaked havoc with the color register of its fine, multicolor printing. Ink would misalign with the expansion... and contraction of the paper stock. This caused poor quality, scrap waste and lost production days. As a result, Carrier experimented with his ideas and invented the first modern day air conditioner. This should be cleaned (if lifetime/permanent) and/or changed every 30 days. 2. Take cover off outdoor section (if you have one) and remove anything surrounding the unit.... 3. Open all vents throughout your home (if closed for the winter). 4. Allow 3-4 hours for the system to run and take the humidity out of the home before expecting it to cool.
