Gaming By Sea Games You Want to Play - Memoir 44 Memoir 44 was an early favorite of my son when he first played board games (he has always been a big history fan and the miniatures were a big draw, too, I think).... He and I played the Pointe du Hoc scenario today in honor of Memorial Day. My son played as the Americans and led the Rangers to victory. We hope to be back sailing and gaming with you soon, Gaming By Sea #gamingbysea #boardgame #bordgaming #boardgamingcruise #gamingcruize

The Games You Want to Play... Railways of the World - Eastern US Map We have played RoW before (just a couple times), but this was the first time playing on Tabletopia.... In search of a tool to offer some online gaming options to our Gaming By Sea community, we have selected Tabletopia as our core sandbox tool. We will be working with our members to host games via some of the other systems, but we liked TT because we could invite people to game at our cost - they did not need to buy the online version of the board game, have a membership, or buy the "sandbox" software. Also, all of the games on TT are official products of the designers/publishers and we liked that - a couple of us being (one real and others hopeful) designers ourselves. It took us a couple games to get accustomed to how the TT system works, but things went smoothly once we had some practice. For being fairly new to RoW and TT, we were pleased to finish the game in just 3 hours (not sure how long it takes RoW pros, though). The pictures are the final state of the 3-player game we played Thursday night. Red and Yellow initially fought over the NE USA while GBS (Blue) went to the Midwest. Yellow won the race for Boston and locked Red out of the picture, so Red moved down the eastern seaboard. GBS began building a network to connect New York to Kansas City, but misplayed and found itself blocked from New York. Yellow was able to take advantage of its connections in the northeast, eventually building rail through Canada and down to Kansas City to complete the Western Link. Red won thanks to building up its engines and moving goods over long distances constantly. He ended the game laden with debt, but that did not pull him down far enough to lose. Yellow finished 2nd, just a couple points ahead of GBS. We hope you will be able to join us for an event one day, Gaming By Sea #gamingbysea #railwaysoftheworld #boardgamecruise #boardgamingcruise

Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 23 (Last Turn) We knew it was getting close to the end of the game, but did not expect it quite so soon...... The Nordic Kingdom went first and moved its Power to the max, earning its 5th Star. Bjorn had moved out on his own again and was just hanging out at a mine. The Saxony Empire, sitting on a large force at another mine, saw its chance to grab its 5th Star with an easy win over a lonely Bjorn. However, their Power was very low and they were counting on their cards and a negative 2 adjustment bonus for their opponents. Polania had assembled a large force at the mine of doom with a group of workers and was prepared to grab a number of neighboring territories. Little did they know, they would not get the chance. The Saxons went second and launched their attack against Bjorn. What they had not realized was that the Nordic Kingdom had the -2 modifier, also. Bjorn single-handedly defeated the Saxon mechs, gaining the Nordic Kingdom its 6th Star! This video shows the final state of the game board and the players (with the exception that the Saxon mechs have not been moved to their home base following their loss to Bjorn). As those of you with experience in Scythe probably anticipated, the Nordic Kingdom was victorious! The combination of the most Stars, the highest Popularity, more cash, more territories, and more resources was kind of a tough combination to beat. Polania pulled out a 2nd place finish thanks to being in the middle range of Popularity, which allowed it to finish a little ahead of the Saxony Empire. Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 20 Having exhausted its Power and cards, the Saxony Empire has regrouped its forces closer to home. Although it is tied with the Nordic Kingdom in stars (4), it is far behind in Popularity.... Polania has built up more forces and ventured back to the mine of doom. It still has fewer mechs than either of the other nations and has almost as little Power as the Saxons. It's Popularity is comparable to the Nordic Kingdom, though it controls much less territory. The Nordic Kingdom continues to avoid conflict with the other two nations. It has all 4 mechs, it is on the verge of reaching maximum power (worth a star), and its Popularity is higher than the others. Bjorn has started another tour and the Kingdom continues to gather resources and territories. Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 18 Bjorn has returned from his tour. The Nordic Kingdom has a high Power rating, good Popularity, 3 mechs, and 3 stars.... The Saxony Empire came back with a vengeance, once again throwing Polania out of the familiar mine battlefield, which has seen so much devastation. The Saxons have low Power and Popularity, but all 4 mechs and 4 stars (using their special rule that let's them count multiple battle victories). Anna tries to go around the Saxons by jumping to another mine to get to the Factory and goes further to complete an encounter. Polania has a single mech, some Power, and competitive Popularity, but only two stars. Polania and the Saxons continue to trade shots, while the Nordic Kingdom ignores them and goes about its business. Gaming By Sea Game Play- Scythe Turn 16 After a failed attempt to counterattack the Saxony Empire with a single mech, Polania found itself without any forces on the board and the Saxony Empire reinforced the battlefield with another mech and sent one toward the Factory.... However, Polania had kept its Power level high, using cards in the first two battles, while the Saxons had drained theirs. The next battle at the mine went to Polania and the Empire's two mechs went home, leaving the Saxon's with a single mech on its way to the Factory. While the other two nations battle, Bjorn of the Nordic Kingdom begins a public relations tour, collecting resources from encounters. You cannot see it in this picture, but the Kingdom's Power level is climbing. The game continues, Gaming By Sea #gamingbysea #boardgame #boardgaming #boardgamingcruise #tabletopgaming

Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 14 Oh, that is where the Saxony Empire was headed with its mechs! Polania discovers, the hard way, that the Saxons could move from mountains to mines and are able to catch Anna alone, sending her home.... The Nordic Kingdom wins the race to be first to the Factory and adds another action choice. The move option that comes with the Factory actions will prove very helpful to Bjorn's future plans. Polania reels from the loss of its leader and a shortage of mechs to respond to the Saxony Empire' surprise attack. Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 13 Polania has finally left the safety of its local neighborhood and pushed into the center using its tunnel as it races to beat the Nordic Kingdom to be first to the Factory.... The Nordic Kingdom has built a substantial supply of resources and is on the verge of entering the Factory. The Saxony Empire has massed a large force, but where are they going with it? All of the nations are still closely grouped on popularity and power. Thanks, Gaming By Sea #gamingbysea #boardgamingcruise #boardgame #scythe #tabletopgame

Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 12 The Saxony Empire continues to build its mech force and they are able to cross rivers - just not into the territory of Polania.... Polania has been building its infrastructure and added a mech to its forces. The Nordic Kingdom has added a mech and is creeping closer to the Factory. Notice that Nordic power is slowly pulling away from the other two nations. Thanks, Gaming By Sea #gamingbysea #boardgame #scythe #boardgaming #tabletopgaming

Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 7 The Saxony Empire has accelerated the arms race and put the first mech on the board. Both Polania and the Nordic Kingdom have enjoyed encounters with the people of Europa.... All of the nations are fairly balanced in power and popularity at this moment. Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Turn 5 This is just a few turns into the game. We newbies are gently feeling our way into the world and learning the various actions.... As you can see, we have started with movement, collecting resources, and "creating" workers. No one has reached out beyond their initial areas, but Polania is about to have its first encounter. These will be coming more frequently. I know it has been a slow process, so I am going to work to get this knocked out for you this weekend. Gaming By Sea Game Play - Scythe Sorry for the delay, but I am finally starting to post some pictures from the family's Scythe game last weekend! Despite this being one of the most popular games out there, none of us had played before.... This picture shows the start. I had Polania, my wife took the Nordic Kingdom, and my son played the Saxony Empire. The eastern edge of the board did not see much action this game, though someone eventually ventured that way. Our initial challenge was understanding how the top and bottom actions worked together, ensuring we were paying and receiving the proper resources, and markers were going to the right place. But, as we discovered quickly, the mechanics of the game are fairly straightforward - there are just a lot of choices to be made. I will post pictures showing the progress of the game going forward, roughly every few turns - a little more quickly than it has been over the past week!
