Although it is a difficult decision, the professional fire fighters and the village have reached an amicable solution to the ongoing disputes. It brings closure to the issue for both sides and more importantly for the citizens. Your Garden City Professional Fire Fighters, both past and present, have been honored to have protected the residents of this great community.
A flawed decision-making process is helping to reduce the level of emergency response in our village. These are decisions that should be made by our entire community. It's time to slow down and find the necessary solutions that work best for the safety of our great community.
We remind all Garden City voters that the petition calling for a referendum vote on the decision by the Board of Trustees to abolish our paid fire fighters is circulating throughout the community. By signing the petition, you are exercising your right as a citizen to have a say in how your public safety is provided. A successful petition drive will force the resolution to a special vote later this fall. You will then have the opportunity to gather all of the facts and make an educated choice on the level of protection that you feel comfortable with. For any questions about the petition, please call (516) 376-1591 or email [email protected].
An email from Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi to Trustee John Delaney on June 27, 2018, included a LOSAP proposal by a benefits administrator company... The maximum benefits in the illustrations were from $400 to $600 monthly. In an email on July 6th, also to Trustee Delaney, Administrator Suozzi says, The leaders of the membership have already decided the version of LOSAP that they want implemented and the vendor also.
On Wednesday, New York State Supreme Court Justice R. Bruce Cozzens issued a temporary restraining order against the Village of Garden City which prohibits the Village from taking any action on its resolution to abolish the jobs of the firefighters, pending a court hearing on August 22nd. The six residents, Kathleen Joyce, Meagan Male, T.J. Michon, Kent and Karen Reiter and Robert Wolff, claim that the Village failed to conduct an environmental review of the action; failed to comply with the state’s Open Meetings Law; and failed to comply with conflict of interest rules in the Village’s Ethic’s Code. The action is brought under Article 78 of New York State’s Civil Practice Law and seeks to void the Village’s resolution to abolish the paid fire department, which was passed by the Board of Trustees on July 25th.
