This year like everything else National History Day (NHD) has been virtual. Two scholars Caleb Premo and Myah Siebels still participated and advanced from the regional contest typically held at Ft. Ticonderoga to the State virtual NHD contest. This year's theme was Communication in History. Caleb did a digital exhibit on the Erie Canal. Myah did a digital exhibit on the Boston Tea Party. They are pictured with their projects below. Congratulations to these two rising young scholars!

Congratulations to members of Tri M, the National Music Honor Society. The audience was treated to several wonderful musical selections. The entire event was conducted in accordance with COVID standards, with the exception of this one group photograph for publication. We have many talented students and thank our teachers for their instruction and parents for their support. Our teachers aren’t the only ones who deliver instruction remotely. One of our 4th-grade students taught his classmates how to use chopsticks today during lunch via Google Meet.

Gouverneur HS will remain remote Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. We continue to wait for results and have added one adult positive and one student positive today to the dashboard. Bev Martin has done an excellent job keeping everyone informed and needs addressed. If anyone has specific medical concerns or general questions please contact Bev Martin 315-276-9159. She moves between all three buildings and works remotely. General questions can be answered by Supe...rintendent Lauren French - 315-486-2689. Quarantine period ends for a number of people Friday at midnight if they were inadvertently exposed prior to HS going remote on Monday. I made the decision to be as safe as possible with the information shared by Public Health regarding our HS students and staff. Thank you This only applies to HS and One Call Now was released earlier today with the same information. See more

Governor Cuomo announced on Friday afternoon that high risk sports, which include wrestling, hockey, basketball and competitive cheerleading, could possibly commence as early as February 1st under certain specific conditions. Under New York State Department of Health guidance, schools may authorize high risk sports, only as permitted by the respective local health authorities, (i.e., county health departments). Local authorities must consider health and safety factors incl...uding COVID-19 positivity rates in the community. All 24 districts in Section X met this morning to discuss the announcement and next steps in the decision-making process. The districts plan to work collaboratively with the St. Lawrence and Franklin County Departments of Public Health to evaluate current health metrics as well as health and safety considerations for student athletes, coaches, school staff, and the public. It is paramount that school district leaders carefully weigh all factors in this decision, which will require some time. At this time, the Section X school districts ask for patience and understanding as we thoughtfully assess this situation. We will keep our communities informed of any decision as soon as information becomes available.

NYSPHSAA Announces the Cancellation of All Winter State Championships; High-Risk Sports Postponed Until Authorization is Provided LATHAM, NY -The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announces the cancellation of all 2021 Winter State Championships and the postponement of all high-risk sports until authorization is granted by state officials. The NYSPHSAA Officers rendered these decisions with input from the NYSPHSAA membership and the 11 Section ...Executive Directors. When examining the feasibility of Winter State Championships, it became apparent that travel and overnight accommodations would create a unique challenge for our member schools, said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. At this time, we must prioritize maximizing student participation without a focus on championship events. The Association’s decision to postpone all high-risk sports until authorization is granted was reinforced by the increase in infection and hospitalization rates across the State. The New York State Department of Health has determined the following NYSPHSAA-endorsed sports to be high risk: basketball, boys lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball, and wrestling. The cancellation of the Winter State Championships (bowling, basketball, boys swimming & diving, competitive cheerleading, gymnastics, indoor track & field, ice hockey, skiing, and wrestling) addresses membership concerns associated with increased travel, hotel accommodations, transportation logistics and the planning for meals. Furthermore, venue capacity limitations and social distancing restrictions make it increasingly difficult to ensure the safety of student-athletes, coaches, and families.
