On this date in 1929, THE SCAR OF SHAME -- one of the few surviving silent "race films" -- had its premiere at Harlem's M&S Douglas Theatre. Race films were independently produced films for and about black people, and most have been lost. The Finger Lakes Film Trail is freely streaming five of these overlooked but hugely important films, with THE SCAR OF SHAME introduced by the Eastman Museum's Head of Library and Archives, Ken Fox. View THE SCAR OF SHAME along with four other race films at https://www.fingerlakesfilmtrail.org/about-the-scar-of-shame

Did you know that Alfred Hitchcock made movie-going a more terrifying experience for the film Psycho by releasing ambiguous trailers, requiring guests couldn't enter the theater after the film started, and playing the soundtrack in the lobby while guests were waiting (interrupting it every now and again with the sounds of a woman screaming)? Learn more about scary movie history on our blog; intern Eleanore Barrera shares the harrowing history of horror movies.

How big was George Eastman's estate? The short answer is 10, but it's a little more complicated than that. Kathy Connor, curator of George Eastman's Legacy, shares how the estate changed over his lifetime and what has happened to it since on our blog.

Looking for some vintage horror and silent scary films to get you in the mood for Halloween? Check out The Dryden Theatre for recommendations, such as James Whale's FRANKENSTEIN (1931), starring Boris Karloff. (Did you know Karloff was so good at keeping his real identity anonymous, that he wasn't invited to the film's premiere?!)

"Nimbus Atlas is a series of slow-motion videos depicting self-made clouds emerging and decomposing in a void. I was curious to find how my clouds evolve, change shape and reflect light. I captured the work with a high-speed camera." --Bernaudt Smilde, see this work on view now at the Eastman Museum. In the second photograph, you can see a behind the scenes look on the set of Nimbus Atlas at Schramstudios in Amsterdam, where Smilde is working together with cameraman Danny Noordanus (photo: Annegret Kellner).

"It's called 'Clouds of the paramount chief, 2018' and the title refers to an essay by anthropologist Gaetano Mangiameli. The essay discusses the taboo that rests on the word for 'rainwater' in the chiefdom of Paga (Upper East Region of Ghana, Africa). The taboo is linked to the idea that it's not up to humans to claim a leading role in shaping the world. A fact that the Western world forgets or ignores except for when natural disaster strikes.... I like to photograph clouds because they seem without scale and are ever-changing. They are iconic and as such can come in many forms and still be recognized as clouds. The play between repetition and variation is very important in my photographic practice." --Bruno V. Roels, see his work on view in Gathering Clouds, now at the Eastman Museum.
