Happy Mother's Day! Saturdays Whale watch produced two slightly playful Humpbacks. Sunday the American Princess Cruises pushed off at noon. Should be a good day.

Two Whale and Dolphin trips going out today, Noon and 5pm push off. Looks like a chance of a late shower, the rain will not be a problem though. The winds are light, and the seas are 1-2f. Looks like a nice day to go Whale watching in NYC on the American Princess Cruises.

April is Citizen Science Month! It’s a month-long celebration of citizen science. You are a citizen scientist when you get involved in research by collecting data, analyzing results, and helping solve some of the biggest problems in science. Citizen Science Month is the perfect time to explore a new citizen science project or introduce your friends and family to the world of citizen science. Gotham Whale has a project called the WANTED PROGRAM and it’s based on Citizen Sci...ence. Our New York City Humpback Whale Catalog is compiled with data from actual scientists and citizen scientist collected. The WANTED PROGRAM is a big part of the success of the NYCHWC. GW is out collecting data sighting information on the waters from the American Princess Cruises and other boats up and down the coast in the NY Bight building the NYCHWC. Citizen Scientists in the same area are sending in sighting information they see on the waters to GW via the WANTED PROGRAM. We get information from people who are on their private pleasure boats either fishing or doing their own whale watches. Passengers send in info of whales seen on other whale watching boats from Cape May to Montauk. Lots of info come in from people on the beach. Lifeguards, bird photographers and beach walkers send in the bulk of on beach sighting information to GW. How you can help GW - Anyone can be a Citizen Scientist and help! All you need to do is when you see a whale or a dolphin, take a clear photo/s. Go to the WANTED PROGRAM website page and fill out the questions and upload the photos you took. It takes a few moments, but by you doing this you are helping GW and whales and dolphins. GW thanks you in advance for being a Citizen Scientist. Please be a GW ambassador by sharing this post, the more people that know the more information we collect. https://gothamwhale.org/citizen-science/ See more

What a start to the Whale watching season on the opening weekend in NYC aboard the American Princess Cruises. Both Saturday and Sunday produced two Humpbacks swimming together. No Dolphins seen but we were getting reports all week and both weekend days, but we could not connect. A big thanks to Beth Miller for sharing your photos from Sunday’s Whale watch.

Right Whale No. 3720 and its calf, one of the 18 NA Right Whales calves born this year, were seen off LI this week. Report a Right Whale Sighting - If you see a Right Whale call 866-755-NOAA (6622) to report the sighting immediately. Grab some photos because they are important. If you’re out boating on ocean waters often, put that NOAA number in your phone. It’s important to get the information to NOAA Fisheries New England/Mid-Atlantic first, NOAA will coordinate with the agencies who need to be contacted. Read up here on what to look for to confirm it’s a Right Whale and what to report to NOAA about the encounter. https://www.greenmatters.com/p/north-atlantic-right-whales-

NYC0089 sighting reports have gone silent and no news is good news in this case. Things were crazy there for NYC and Gotham Whale for a few days with NYC0089 transiting the Battery Park, Financial District waters. At this time, we assume, NYC0089 made it south past the Verrazano bridge. But, the local bays, before you get to the open ocean, have tons of food for this whale to munch on. Raritan Bay, Lower NY Bay, Sandy hook Bay and Jamaica Bay are a few spots south of the Verr...azano the whale can go before passing the imaginary boundary line that separates Lower NY Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. We have documented whales many times in these areas, it’s not uncommon. Jamaica Bay is the only back bay in that area we get concerned when we get reports of whales being in that bay. Hey, NYC0089 could have charged straight south and is now deep in the Atlantic Ocean??? We hope the latter. Let’s hope that #NYC0089 had fun taking in the holiday sights and enjoyed munching on bait balls of fish. See you soon NYC0089, but hopefully next year from the deck on an American Princess Cruises Whale Watch! See more

WOW! It has been a crazy couple of days in the NYC Whale World!! #NYC0089 has taken the world by storm by traveling up to Manhattan Island to take in the sights and get a bite to eat. We’re not talkin’ Pizza here folks We’re talkin’ Shad, Herring and Bunker. Hey, you want a chance to see #NYC0089 in person? It could happen! The American Princess Cruises is going out Saturday Dec 12th departing from Pier 3 in Sheepshead Bay at Noon. The AP is the original NYC Whale Watching ...boat. The same boat Gotham Whale has been doing its research on Whales, Dolphins and Seals from/on since the start. #NYC0089 (at the time of this post) has not been seen anywhere. But it’s a big city and there are places to hide. If the Whale headed south past the Verrazano, we could possibly see it tomorrow. There are other whales around and the seals have been seen in numbers as well. SO MUCH BAIT in the area for these whales and seals to feed on. The oceans still alive with action, reports of Blue Fin Tuna still in the area as well! This whale watching season is never going to endand we are OK with that. Here are a few photos of #NYC0089 See more

It was Magical, Inspirational, Incredible! Of all the things in 2020, a Humpback Whale in the Hudson RiverIT IS AMAZING Not our words but we hear these words a lot! Almost every time we are out on the American Princess Cruises when we are on Whales and Dolphins. These people were lucky enough to see a humpback from Manhattan, it is rare, but it has happened. Check out the video. A big congratulations to the entire Gotham Whale team for being on this. Its expertise, quic...k response on knowing which whale it was In the New York City Humpback Whale Catalog (NYC0089) and keeping its finger on the pulse of social media. A big thank you to all the Citizen Scientists that sent in photos, videos and filled out the WANTED PROGRAM form or questionnaire. Once again, NYC residents were wakened up to the fact that there are whales in Gotham City. See more

We have received a few reports of a Humpback Whale in the Hudson River via our WANTED PROGRAM". We want to thank everyone yesterday and in the past for submitting their sightings to GW. The Humpback Whales are here in NY waters all year round. Some Humpbacks stay up here and don’t make the trip down to the calving and breeding grounds of the Silver Bank, Navidad Banks, Samana Bay and other spots in that area. This is why the Gotham Whale "WANTED PROGRAM" is so important to ...us and the Whales of NYC. The program is a big part of our Citizen Scientist based New York City Humpback Whale Catalog. With the information we get from the WANTED PROGRAM and from the Gotham Whale Naturalists and volunteers stationed on Whale Watching boats going out from NY and NJ. The NYCHWC is extensive and is building expedientially each year. We think the Dorsal looks familiar to a Dorsal we have seen earlier this year. We are waiting for a clearer photo to come in to confirm. We will either have a number of what whale it is or give it a new number in the NYCHWC. There are still lots of pockets of Atlantic Menhaden in the area, the most important fish in the Sea. We call these fish Bunker and they range in size from peanut bunker to fully grown mature Bunker. The whale is feeding on these fish in the Hudson and surrounding areas. It also might be taking in the sights and sounds of NYC? It might be both reasons, but all boat traffic is notified, and the boats are on the lookout. Safe travels to the whale https://gothamwhale.org/citizen-science/ See more
